UPDATE: Hofstra Shooting Victim Identified

The shooting took place on California Avenue across from California Avenue Elementary School.

UPDATE: The Hofstra University student that was shot and killed in her apartment Friday morning has been identified as Andrea Rebello, a junior from Tarrytown that was a 2010 graduate of Sleepy Hollow High School.

A Hofstra University student was shot to death Friday morning a few blocks away from campus in a rental home she shared, police said.

The perpetrator was gunned down by police. Cops also said that four people, three females and a male, were home at the time of the shooting, although nobody additional was harmed.

The identity of the gunman has not yet been released. Nassau County Police are investigating, and further details on the shooting are not available.

"
We have one female who was a student dead in the house," Nassau police spokesman Det. Vincent Garcia told Newsday. "We have a perpetrator dead in the house."

Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz released a statement on the school's website.

"The Nassau County Police have notified us that early this morning a Hofstra student was killed during a tragic crime which took place in a rental house off campus," Rabinowitz said. "The police investigation is ongoing, and we do not yet know all of the relevant details."

The house where the shootings took place is on California Avenue, just south of the university campus and across the street from the California Avenue Elementary School. The elementary school, whose grounds abut a university parking lot, is part of the Uniondale School District.

The elementary school will be closed to students and staff on Friday, district officials confirmed.

"What we do know is that a young member of the Hofstra family has been taken from us in a senseless act of violence," Rabinowitz added. "Our hearts and minds and our thoughts and prayers are with her family, her friends and her classmates. While our hearts are laden with grief, this weekend’s commencement ceremonies will go on as scheduled. The accomplishments of our graduates must be recognized, and together our community will heal and find the strength to move forward."
