Millie Jones to Receive 'Woman of Distinction' Award

East Meadow resident will receive the award during ceremonies Aug. 10.

Assemblyman Tom McKevitt has named East Meadow resident Millie Jones a "Woman of Distinction."

The assemblyman hosts an awards ceremony annually to honor women in his 17th assembly district who go "above and beyond the call of duty." Jones will receive her award during ceremonies Aug. 10 at the Farmingdale Public Library.

"Since taking office, I have met countless outstanding women who work hard to make a difference in our community. These women care for our neighbors, family and friends, and I am a better person for having met them. All too often, their exceptional acts go unnoticed," McKevitt said.

Unbeknownst to Jones, assistant branch manager of First National Bank in East Meadow, the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce nominated her for the honor.

"I had absolutely no idea," Jones told Patch. "It was a complete surprise. I'm very, very honored."

Jones said she received a letter in the mail from the assemblyman's office notifying her that she was an nominee.

Active in her community for years, Jones is the immediate past president of the chamber and currently serves as chair of its board, is a member of East Meadow Kiwanis and East Meadow Sons of Italy and serves as the outreach person for United Methodist Church. She also volunteers, along with her daughter, to help plan Nassau University Medical Center's children's Christmas party every year.

McKevitt’s selection committee reviewed candidates in various fields, including business, education, humanitarianism, military affairs, community/civic affairs, health care, government and volunteerism.

The Farmingdale Public Library is located at 116 Merritts Road in Farmingdale. The award ceremony will take place between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
