Still Vacant One Year After Sandy

Superstorm forced the closure of Zorn's on Hempstead Turnpike and there doesn't appear to be much movement on the property since.

One year after Superstorm Sandy made landfall on Long Island, not much has changed at 1939 Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow.

The former location of the family-owned eatery, Zorn's, which first opened in East Meadow in 1998, shuttered because of the storm.

A manager said the business suffered damages and power outages and the storm was the "last straw." Owners have no plans to re-open in East Meadow.

A sign posted last fall is still taped to the front door: "The Zorn Family regrets to announce the permanent closing of this location." The outdoor tables are gone as is the sign on the building but now a "For Rent" sign erected in front of the building by the August James Realty Group has become the focal point for those driving by.

Repeated attempts to the reach the real estate agency were unsuccessful.

Zorn's has two other Long Island locations: Bellmore (2495 Merrick Road) and Bethpage (4321 Hempstead Tpke). The Bethpage location has been around since 1940.
