Shapiro's Arm Leads Lady Jets to County Finals

The senior pitcher allowed just two hits in East Meadow's semifinal victory.

Kerri Shapiro is peaking at just the right time, at least according to her coach. Shapiro, combined with a couple of timely East Meadow hits, was able to thwart Massapequa on Thursday, leading to a 2-0 East Meadow in at the Mitchell Athletic Complex. On the mound, Shapiro got the momentum heading in East Meadow's favor early, as she threw the ball by the Chiefs' bats with ease. In fact, she struck out the first four Massapequa players to face her. "She was excellent today," East Meadow Coach Stewart Fritz said. "She really took her game to another level." The Jets got Shapiro the lead after two were out in the bottom of the first. Madison West drew a walk, and then Shapiro singled. Dina Larosa came up with a big two out hit to score West …

Clarke Baseball Stunned by Plainedge, 15-1

Rams face do-or-die situation on Thursday.

Despite a lengthy layoff and plenty of rest, the Clarke baseball team was stunned by visiting Plainedge 15-1 to fall behind in their best-of-three series 1-0 at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center on Wednesday. The story of the game was Plainedge’s Michael Miller, who started off the game by giving up a double to John Fogarty. With the Rams trailing 4-0 at that point, it looked like the comeback was on, but Miller knuckled down and did not allow a hit for the rest of the game. “I just felt good today,” Miller said. “It helps when you are getting so much support from the offense.” Plainedge struck early and often against Clarke’s Joe Fusco. The first run scored in the top of the first when Steve Miller grounded into a fielder’s choice. As …

Clarke Softball Slides Past New Hyde Park

Lady Gladiators fall short to Lady Rams in Class A quarterfinals.

One hit, one run, one game. That’s what the playoffs sometimes boil down to: a moment one way or the other to decide your fate for the season. Moving on or moving out. For the girls of the New Hyde Park varsity softball team, it was the latter Monday afternoon at Clarke Middle School as the Lady Rams were the ones going to the Class A semi-finals by way of a 3-2 score. Tied at two in the bottom of the fifth inning, Clarke’s Aly Smith ended up singling in shortstop Alyssa Colletti with the winning run while pitcher Sarah Cornell was able to work out of a pair of leadoff walks in the sixth to clinch the win. “She had an awesome performance for us today,” Clarke head coach Chrissy DeMott said of Cornell. “For an eighth grader she was able to …

Letter to the Editor: Parents Praise PAL Lacrosse Coaches

It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to give the kids the true attention they deserve.

Dear Editor, The parents of the fifth grade East Meadow PAL Lacrosse team would like to acknowledge the outstanding dedication of our coaches.   For the third year in a row, our boys have had the unique experience of being the only PAL team coached by current and former members of the high school LAX team.   Head coach James Skinner and Rick Piket (EMHS alumni), along with Nicholas Marinello, Lenny Volpe and Collin Skinner (current EMHS students and varsity lacrosse players) volunteer their time to teach these young boys the basic mechanics of lacrosse as well as help build their self-esteem and character. The coaches go to school, work, play lacrosse and also fit in time to coach three days a week. These young men work to instill …

I can't say enough about the coaches of the 5th grade PAL team. As Nicole stated, unlike other teams, these high school/and college students take on ALL of the responsibilites normally tended to by the adult coaches, and do so without question or complaints. When my son started playing with these coaches in third grade, he as well as many other members of the team, had never even held a lacrosse …   more ›

Rich Ohrnberger Earns NY Giant Try-Out

The East Meadow High School graduate broke the news via Twitter on May 10.

Rich Ohrnberger, the East Meadow High School graduate who was cut by the New England Patriots in February, is getting a new opportunity with the New York Giants, according to his personal Twitter account. "Checking in at mini-camp for a tryout with the NY Giants," Ohrnberger wrote. "Hopefully my rigorous off-season regime of hot yoga and calisthenics pays off." It's been a rough go of it for Ohrnberger, 26, as he missed the entire 2012 season with a concussion. In February, Patriots' brass decided to cut the cord on the former East Meadow Jet. Ohrnberger never expected to be taken in the NFL Draft in 2009. When his phone rang during the fourth round, the New England Patriots proved Ohrnberger’s expectations wrong. Coach Bill Belichick …

Castaneda's Arm, Timely Hitting Lead to Opening Victory

The Jets had consecutive three-run innings that broke the game wide open.

The East Meadow Boys Baseball team was able to get the big hits when it needed them most, and the Jets cruised to a 10-3 win in the first round playoff match-up against Mepham at East Meadow High School Monday. The big story for East Meadow revolved around the pitching of Matt Castaneda, who hurled a complete game five-hitter. He also reached base three times in the game, including a big RBI single in the third inning. “I just felt good out there today,” Castaneda said. “My pitches were working, and I was able to keep the game moving.” Robbie Healy set the table in the first inning with a lead-off double, and he would eventually score on a Mepham error. Kyle Aberasturi added a two-run single later in the frame to give the Jets a 3-0 lead…

East Meadow Resident Named Hofstra Baseball Coach

John Russo had been working with an interim tag since January, but that has since been removed.

Just four months after John Russo, a resident of East Meadow, was named the interim head baseball coach at Hofstra University, the school announced on May 7. "John has been with the program for four years now," Interim Director of Athletics Danny McCabe said. "He has had a hand in recruiting all of the current players on the team, as well as the incoming class for 2013. John has done a great job throughout his tenure, and with the success that the team is having this season he has proven he is the right person for the position." Russo, whose experience includes head coaching duties at St. Joseph's College in Indiana and the University of West Alabama, was promoted in January after Patrick Anderson left to school to take a job as consultant…

Clarke Bests Mineola Softball 8-1 in First Round

Lady Rams take pitching ‘Battle of the Babies,’ ending Lady Mustangs’ season.

It was a solid start for the Clarke Softball Team, as they were able to cruise to an 8-1 win against visiting Mineola on Saturday afternoon. Sarah Cornell and Emily Skupp, eighth graders both, will meet again for the next four years for Clarke and Mineola, respectively. Earlier in the year the two pitchers for their respective squads had faced each other in a scrimmage match with Skupp’s Lady Mustangs taking that initial meeting. It seemed only proper that the two should meet again in the first round of the Class A playoffs Saturday at the backfield at Clarke Middle School. “We knew that we were going to have to work hard to beat them,” Clarke head coach Chrissy DeMott said. “It definitely wasn’t a given. We basically always make it …
