The Foundation was named for Jason F. Gruen, who died suddenly from IHSS (Idiopathic Hypertrophic Subaortic Stenosis) in 1985, and started by his mother, Susan Gruen Helsinger, in order to make parents aware of the risks faced by their otherwise healthy children. Today, the Foundation assists in the advancement of medical knowledge related to juvenile heart abnormalities, as well as ensuring that local school children receive free echocardiograms in order to diagnose any problems. The Foundation also maintains a working relationship with the Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York (formerly the Schneider Children's Hospital) and the New York-Presbyterian Children's Hospital.
