Bowling Green Teacher Honored with Prestigious Award

Rich Santer received special recognition for his work with his students.

Rich Santer, a teacher at Bowling Green Elementary School, recently received the Turner N. Wiley Teacher of the Year Award. This honor, named after the late NASA Chief of the Communication Engineering Branch Turner N. Wiley, allows Challenger Center’s international network of Challenger Learning Centers to recognize teachers from their communities who exemplify the spirit of the Challenger crew’s education mission, and who share a commitment to learning about science, mathematics and technology. Staff members from each of the Challenger Learning Centers are invited to nominate one instructor who had cultivated a strong relationship with their local Challenger Learning Center; and whose commitment to education has made a noticeable impact …

Barnum Woods First Graders Celebrate New Playground

The $40K project was entirely funded in a private fashion.

First graders at Barnum Woods Elementary School are enjoying the new playground that resulted from a collaborative effort within the community. The ribbon was cut on March 30 for the new playground, which Friends of Barnum Co-Chair and Barnum Woods parent Todd Weinstein said cost an estimated $40K. “It was all done, for the most part, outside of the general school district,” Weinstein said. “They didn’t spend any money on it.” The money came from a variety of sources, including a $20K grant from Legis. Norma Gonsalves’, R-East Meadow, office. The Friends of Barnum also raised $15K with various bracelet sales; bake sales and coin collections throughout East Meadow. Let Patch save you time. I wholeheartedly support the fact that this playground was funded with *private* dollars. Not that "slides and swings" weren't enough in my day (the 80s haha) to keep us kids healthy and having fun.... but whatever.   more ›

Patch Question: Reaction to Budget Results

The residents of East Meadow voted strongly to support the proposed 2012-13 school budget.

In a move that was not unexpected, the proposed 2012-13 East Meadow School budget received overwhelming support from the voters on Tuesday. “It’s a validation of all of the hard work that all of us at central administration have done together,” Board of Education President Joseph Parisi said. “I think a great budget was put forward that preserved programs and staff, and it also recognized our economic times.” Overall, 72 percent of the voters cast their ballots in favor of the budget, which did not include any cuts to programs or staff. “The overwhelming support for the budget is unbelievable,” Brian O’Flaherty, who was reelected to a new three-year term as trustee, told Patch. “Seventy-two percent is a great number.” Let Patch save you …

How do I feel? Disgusted. Parents of school kids get engraved invitations to bake sales and cake sales, while non-parents get treated like pariahs... "Oh I hope they don't come!!!" East Meadow and every other Long Island district had years of rate increases that exceeded inflation. And with all of the 20-35 year olds leaving, the "brain drain," it's my understanding that enrollment is down. So …   more ›

It received 2,033 yes votes as opposed to 790 no votes, a difference of 1,243. “It’s a validation of all of the hard work that all of us at central administration have done together,” Board of Education President Joseph Parisi said. “I think a great budget was put forward that preserved programs and staff, and it also recognized our economic times.” Receive updates to this story and …

School Budget Vote Set for Tuesday

The proposed East Meadow school budget preserves jobs, programs and class sizes while staying within the tax cap.

With the East Meadow School District budget vote set for Tuesday, school officials are urging locals to head out to the polls and take part. “Our budget as proposed maintains all of our existing programs and class sizes as they are,” Superintendent Louis DeAngelo said. “It avoids any excess of staff. I really do believe that this is a sound budget, and in my heart of hearts I think the community will feel that way too.” Residents can vote for the proposed school and East Meadow Public Library budgets at their local elementary school from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and the results will be tallied at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center and revealed on East Meadow Patch a short time later. The proposed budget, which was adopted on April 4, …

Proposed School Budget Maintains Programs, Staff

Thanks to the reserve that the district has, no major cuts have been reported in next year's proposed budget.

The proposed 2012-13 East Meadow School District proposed budget includes no cuts in programs or staff at any of the area’s schools. Class sizes will also remain within district guidelines, and Superintendent Louis DeAngelo told attendees at Thursday's presentation at the Leon. J. Campo Salisbury Center that it was not easy to prepare the budget with the newly required tax cap rules in effect. “We are under a new budget reality this year,” DeAngelo said. “The chunk of money we requested is truly and honestly two percent more than it was last year.” The proposed budget includes a $3,579,051 increase in expenditures (or 1.97 percent), with increases in programming accounting for more than 77 percent of the money. It hasn’t been easy for the …

Clarke Students Honored for Musical Performances

Five of the district's talented musicians performed for an audience in Carle Place.

Some of the East Meadow School District's finest musicians were recognized recently for their excellent musical performances at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Carle Place. According to the church's website, Laura Carrington Barboza, the youth director of the church, heard that these W.T. Clarke High School students were looking to perform for a live audience, so she had her daughter, Lien Barboza, invite the students to come down and show their skills. Three separate flautists, Anna Cronin, Gouri Sandananda and Maggie Cotter, each performed classical music in separate performances. Vocalists Samantha  Bishop and Carly Sheehan brought a taste of Broadway to the church as well. All of the participants were rewarded with an ovation, …

View Finder: Running with the Rams 2012

The streets were packed for the annual 5K at and around W.T. Clarke High School.

With numbers plastered across their chests, members of the student body, teachers, faculty and friends participated in the fourth annual Run with the Rams at W.T. Clarke High School Saturday. The main draw of the day was a 5K, in which roads were blocked off and people ran, at whatever speed they preferred, for a good cause. Others stood on the side of the road and cheered on participants as they passed by. The finish line was located at the rear of the school near the football field, and people were given their times there. Also available in the vicinity was food, drinks and music that was provided by a DJ. The money raised at the event goes to Clarke Athletics, although a percentage will be given to a family in need, as was the case in …

By the Numbers: Cost Per Pupil

Patch has compiled data on how much Hemsptead Town school districts are spending per student.

Data released by the State Education Department shows that most Long Island school districts are proposing budgets that fall within the 2 percent property tax cap. Still the implementation of this tax cap has forced school districts to take a closer look at staff, programs and student spending. With the average cost per pupil in Nassau County set at $25,098, Patch delves further to explore how much each school district in the Town of Hempstead is spending on its students. This is a follow up to our recent school budget breakdowns story. That story included proposed 2012-13 budgets, tax levy increases, enrollment figures and cuts.   Sources: New York State Education Department, 2011-12 Property Tax Report Cards and 2011-12 School Budget …

@ Chris. Albany repealed the fingerprint 2 years ago (by Gov. Cuomo). NYC just repealed that fingerprint requirement this month (lead by Christin Quinn). Not suprising as the majority of voting constituents in Albany and NYC are on welfare or work for public service. Since they represent a large voting pool, these cads will do anything to get votes and openly pander to the majority, regardless of…   more ›
