Ceremony honored "Nassau's Finest" who made the supreme sacrifice.
Fallen Nassau County Police Department officers were honored during a solemn ceremony Thursday in Mineola. Police and county officials recognized all deceased members of the department, which coincided with Police Week in Nassau County. The event featured a placement of floral tributes for all 32 NCPD members who made the supreme sacrifice. The Nassau County Police Memorial, which was first dedicated on May 12, 1982, features a massive stone monolith that displays two Bronze plaques. An East Meadow woman was sentenced to 60 days in jail and five years probation Tuesday for stalking and harassment after she wrote a series of threatening letters to an East Meadow Little League official last year due to her son not being chosen for a local travel team. According to police, on May 21, 2011, Janet Chiauzzi, 45, allegedly sent letters "of a threatening nature" to an East Meadow Little League official and his son. Police said the letter also made threats against the victim's wife and daughter. There were no injuries, fire officials said.
A fire started in the basement of a house at 228 Green Valley Road on Saturday night. There were no injuries. According to East Meadow Fire Department Chief John Priest, the fire started around 9:06 p.m. while the residents were in the home. "Everyone got out safely," he said. "The fire was contained to the basement." The cause of the fire is still being investigated, Priest said. The Uniondale Fire Department was on the scene while departments from North Bellmore and North Merrick were on standby.

One car attempted to make a left off of Luddington Road when the collision occurred.
Two people were injured in a three-car crash at the intersection of Merrick Avenue and Luddington Road Tuesday, according to witnesses. The crash, which happened at approximately 11:30 a.m., took place when one vehicle attempted to make a left off of Luddington Road onto Merrick Avenue. Another vehicle was traveling on Merrick Avenue and the two collided. One of the vehicles then struck a parked car, which is owned by Rachael O'Mara. "Both of the drivers needed to be taken to the hospital," she said. "They looked pretty bad." O'Mara described one of the drivers to be an elderly woman, while the other was a man. Herber Guzman, 40, allegedly killed a Hempstead man on April 26.
An East Meadow man was arrested for his alleged involvement in the murder of a Hempstead man, which took place on April 26. According to Nassau County Homicide Squad detectives, a 911 call was received at 4:39 a.m. in regards to a male lying in the street on Martin Avenue in Hempstead. When Hempstead Police arrived, it was discovered that the victim had suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The man, identified as Stanley Cater, 47, of Hempstead, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead by hospital staff at 5:39 a.m. After an investigation, police arrested Herber Guzman, 40, of East Meadow. The first realignment in Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano's police precinct restructuring took effect this week after the Eighth Precinct in Levittown was absorbed by the Second Precinct in Woodbury. The former Eighth Precinct is now the county's first community policing center.
