Fr. Thomas Donohoe, Former NUMC Chaplain, Dies at 75

Remembered for uniting multi-ethnic congregation in Long Beach and his contributions throughout Nassau County.

When he wasn’t leading his congregation at St. Mary of the Isle Church in Long Beach, Fr. Thomas Donohoe was often reading books about the Civil War, collecting memorabilia related to the war, or visiting battlefields such as Antietam and Gettysburg. “[Abraham] Lincoln is important because he got us through a war that divided the nation, and saved our country,” Donohoe told Patch about the 16th president’s legacy on the 200th anniversary of his birthday in 2011. “We tend to forget now our founding fathers like Washington, as well as Lincoln. Russell Ciolli, Owner of Grimaldi's, Dies at 39

East Meadow resident leaves behind many family and friends, including wife and two children.

Russell Ciolli, an East Meadow resident and the owner of Grimaldi's Pizza in Garden City, died Wednesday of a heart attack. He was 39. Honored as Business Person of the Year in 2009, Mr. Ciolli was very active with the Garden City Chamber of Commerce, serving as a "dedicated director" of the board for the past four years. "Ever willing to open his business to facilitate breakfast chamber meetings, he was instrumental in the development of the Friend of the Chamber Card, which will be part of his legacy, that will continue to help the vitality of our business community," said John Wilton, president of Garden City's Merchant Committee. Frank Mazza Unexpectedly Dies at 56

The East Meadow PAL president collapsed at Division Avenue High School's football game Saturday.

Frank Mazza, the man who was astronomical in the creation and growth of the East Meadow Police Athletic League (PAL), died on Sunday at the age of 56. Mazza was working security at Saturday’s football game at Division Avenue High School when he collapsed. After he was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center for observation, doctors discovered that he suffered an aneurysm. He was pronounced dead on Sunday morning, hospital officials said. "He was probably the heart and soul of the program," said James Narell, a trustee for the East Meadow PAL. "He ran everything behind the scenes." Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs, 56, Dies

News spreads across the world about Jobs' death.

One month after stepping down as chief executive, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has passed away. The New York Times reported: Mr. Jobs stepped down from the chief executive role in late August, saying he could no longer fulfill his duties, and became chairman. He underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in 2004, and received a liver transplant in 2009. In a statement, Apple said “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. Video: Nassau Police Honor Fallen Officer

An army in blue showed up in Selden Thursday for the viewing of fallen Nassau County Police officer Geoffrey J. Breitkopf.

Thousands of police officers in dress blue uniforms lined up outside the Selden Fire Department Thursday evening to pay tribute to fallen Nassau County police officer Geoffrey J. Breitkopf. Breitkopf, 40, a decorated veteran of the elite Bureau of Special Operations, was accidentally shot and killed Saturday by an MTA officer while responding to a call in Massapequa Park. He also was a volunteer firefighter in Selden, where he lived with his wife and two children. Among those on hand for Thursday services were Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey. Services for Breitkopf will be held Friday at St. Margaret of Scotland Roman Catholic Church, located at 81 College Road in Selden, beginning at 12:30 p.m. …

Friends and Family Members Say Goodbye to Francesco Posillico

Friends and family members gathered at St. Brigid's Church on Saturday morning for the funeral of Francesco Posillico, 17, of Westbury, who died in a car accident in Westbury on Tuesday evening. According to police, the accident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. when they believe Posillico, a student at Clarke High School, ran a stop sign at the intersection of Bowling Green Drive and Salisbury Road that caused a collision between Posillico's BMW and a Levittown woman's Chevy. The BMW flipped over, and Posillico was ejected, and police say it was unlikely that he was wearing a seat belt. Two other teens were seriously injured in the accident, both students at Clarke as well. Daniel Roche, 16, of Westbury, was sitting in the front …

East Meadow Broadcast Veteran Joel Blumberg Dies at 64

Longtime radio producer, engineer, play-by-play man dies suddenly en route to Heat-Knicks game.

By all accounts, sports radio veteran Joel Blumberg of East Meadow was both a force to be reckoned with and an unsung hero in his corner of the sports broadcasting world. For more than 30 years, Blumberg worked as an engineer, producer and play-by-play man for professional and college sports teams including the Islanders, Rangers, Knicks, St. John's and Manhattan College. He was also the former sports director for WGBB radio on Long Island as well as an avid film buff and historian. However, Blumberg, 64, died suddenly Friday, Dec. 17 of an apparent heart attack while riding a New York City–bound LIRR train, en route to work at a Miami Heat vs. New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden.  Blumberg is survived by his wife, Jill, and …

Fallica was 85 years old.

Nancy Fallica (nee Caliendo) of Wheatley Heights passed away on Dec. 16 at the age of 85. Beloved wife of the late Edmund, Fallica was the beloved mother of Monica Tarantino (Paul), Ed (Ramona), Raymond J. and Rose Fuger (Dan). Cherished grandmother of Timothy, Tyler, Christopher and Daniel. Beloved aunt of many nieces and nephews. Fallica was the proud owner of A Taste of Home Bakery in North Bellmore.
