A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.
The Nassau Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) on Thursday rejected County Executive Ed Mangano's proposed contract with Morgan Stanley to broker a deal for a privatized sewer system. The deal would have paid the financial service firm at least $5 million to broker a deal for the county with a private operator for the sewer system and an investor who would fund the transaction. According to Long Island Business News: The contract, approved by the Nassau Legislature April 16, would have retained Morgan Stanley to find an investor that would lend the county upward of $750 million in exchange for making a profit from running the county’s failing sewer system. "The NIFA board is clearly confused about the potential public-private partnership for …

Ceremony honored "Nassau's Finest" who made the supreme sacrifice.
Fallen Nassau County Police Department officers were honored during a solemn ceremony Thursday in Mineola. Police and county officials recognized all deceased members of the department, which coincided with Police Week in Nassau County. The event featured a placement of floral tributes for all 32 NCPD members who made the supreme sacrifice. The Nassau County Police Memorial, which was first dedicated on May 12, 1982, features a massive stone monolith that displays two Bronze plaques. "These were the men and women you wanted as your friend, neighbor and most importantly police officers," said Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano during Thursday's memorial service, referring to those officers who were lost in the line of duty. "It is my…

The popular East Meadow hotspot received 29 percent of the vote.
On Monday, Patch enlisted your help to name the best place to get catered food in East Meadow, and the readers have responded emphatically. After 78 votes were tallied, Uncle Giuseppe's was this week's choice, as it garnered 23 votes, which was eight more than both Nina's Deli and Figarelly's. Mama Theresa's was in fourth place with 11 votes, and right behind them was Ciro's Pizzeria & Restaurant with nine. Borrelli's also got four votes during the contest, and Il Vizio Ristorante was given one vote as well. Uncle Giuseppe's was not nominated by Patch when the initial poll was posted, but the readers commented to voice their support, which forced Patch to add it as an option. The same can be said for Nina's Deli. Let Patch save you time. …

Safety is the number one concern in adding the two new stoplights at well-traveled East Meadow intersections.
Newbridge Road, which is also known as Route 106, will soon be the home to two new traffic lights, according to the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT). According to an email received from Eileen Peters, a public information officer for the DOT, the signals are being installed at Second Avenue and at Amherst Street/Lawn Drive along Newbridge Road, and they "are expected to be operational by June." "The signals will be activated by detecting a vehicle on the side street, meaning they will remain green on NY Route 106/Newbridge Road until/unless a vehicle is detected on the side street," Peters said. "Protected/permissive left turn arrows for northbound and southbound NY 106 at both intersections will be provided." Peters added…
The senior pitcher allowed just two hits in East Meadow's semifinal victory.
Kerri Shapiro is peaking at just the right time, at least according to her coach. Shapiro, combined with a couple of timely East Meadow hits, was able to thwart Massapequa on Thursday, leading to a 2-0 East Meadow in at the Mitchell Athletic Complex. On the mound, Shapiro got the momentum heading in East Meadow's favor early, as she threw the ball by the Chiefs' bats with ease. In fact, she struck out the first four Massapequa players to face her. "She was excellent today," East Meadow Coach Stewart Fritz said. "She really took her game to another level." The Jets got Shapiro the lead after two were out in the bottom of the first. Madison West drew a walk, and then Shapiro singled. Dina Larosa came up with a big two out hit to score West …

East Meadow's doctor takes a closer look.
This week the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a report on the long term use of biphosponates-the main class of drugs prescribed to treat osteoporosis. Sold under various brand names (i.e. Fosamax, Boniva and Reclast) these medications are given at the time of diagnosis, but whether therapy should be indefinite or time limited is not clear. Osteoporosis, or “thinning of the bones” is a major health threat to millions of Americans. The prevalence of disease increases with age, particularly in women who have gone thru the menopause and have lost the hormonal environment that helps maintain bone health during their first decades of life. The main threat from the condition is fracture of the bones-hip, vertebral (back bone) and …
