Local Girl Scouts Honored with Gold Award

Only five percent of girl scouts attain the honor.

East Meadow twins Julianna and Carmela Cavallo were recently honored for receiving the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award. 

There were several ceremonies around town in honor of the 121 Nassau County Gold Award recipients for 2012, which is also Girl Scout's 100th Anniversary year.

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County Ceremony was held at Adelphi University on June 12, and East Meadow's ceremony was held on June 15 at East Meadow High School. Nine girl scouts from East Meadow received the East Meadow School Superintendents Award.

The Gold Award is the highest honor a girl scout may receive and only five of all girl scouts commit to the challenge.

Julianna Cavallo's Gold Award project, "Ladies First"' encouraged young girls to follow their dreams through various empowerment activities at several workshops. Carmela Cavallo's Gold Award project, "Fit to Hit", addressed the Childhood Obesity epidemic by teaching young children the fundamentals of tennis. She held tennis clinics for several weeks.

Identical twins Julianna and Carmela are juniors at .  Both are National Honor Society members as well as Italian, Music, and Business Honor Society members. They are active in Youth Band and play at Sunday 5 p.m. mass. They have been girl scouts for 12 years (since kindergarten).
