“Mangano Tax” Hitting Nassau Residents Again

Tax bills are arriving in Nassau mailboxes this week and homeowners are shocked and outraged at the rates, which for the second year in a row are much higher than originally projected. School tax rates have gone up 19% over the past two years—well over the state mandated tax cap. This additional tax rate—the “Mangano Tax”—is directly attributable to the mismanaged assessment system. Mangano should be intimately familiar with this tax, as he is experiencing it personally.

“Ed Mangano tries to pull the wool over our eyes by telling us that he hasn't raised taxes," said Suozzi. "But anyone who looks at their tax bill will clearly see that that’s not true. Your tax bills are skyrocketing again, and it’s because of the mismanaged tax assessment system. In fact, Mangano’s own property taxes have steadily risen since 2011.”

Suozzi noted that in the Bethpage School District where Mangano lives, taxes have gone up an additional 10% above what the school district had planned.  A review or property records shows that taxes on Mangano's home have increased from $11,668.07 to $14,462.14 in the last two years.

"Even Ed Mangano has to realize he's paying higher taxes because of the 'Mangano Tax' ", said Suozzi. "After pledging to fix the tax assessment system, Ed Mangano has made it worse than it’s ever been.

"He hasn't presented a credible plan to fix the system and has shown a stunning lack of leadership," continued Suozzi. "The 'Mangano Tax' is hurting too many of us, including Mangano himself!"

Mangano first tried to push the burden onto the schools with the irresponsible County Guaranty lawsuit, and then tried to blame the schools for increased taxes.

“When you get your tax bill in the mail, be sure to say ‘Thank you, Ed Mangano for raising my taxes’,” added Nassau County Comptroller Candidate Howard Weitzman. “Mangano and Comptroller George Maragos pledged to improve the assessment system, and instead they broke it, causing tax bills to jump for most taxpayers.”

“If Ed Mangano wants his tax bill to stop rising, he should vote for me. Fixing this broken assessment system and setting us on the right fiscal path for the long-term takes leadership—not passing the buck,” said Suozzi. “I will stop passing this burden onto school property taxpayers and our future generations, and pledge to drop the County Guaranty lawsuit immediately and fix this broken assessment system.”
