View the Sky With Friends

Looking for something to do? Check out an astronomy event this weekend.

While it's nice to sometimes be by yourself and just lie on the grass or the beach and gaze up at the beautiful night sky, it's also nice to be able to share it with others who have the same feelings of wonder and excitement. That’s why being part of an astronomy club can be very rewarding and informative.

I’ve been a member of my club, the Amateur Observers’ Society of NY, www.aosny.org, since 1974, and spent 17 years as President. I get to sit back now as President Emeritus but still enjoy all of the many activities we have for the club, our observatory, and the public.

This Saturday, September 24, I will be joining my club members at the Family Fall and Halloween Festival in Syosset-Woodbury Community Park in Syosset from 1-4PM. http://www.oysterbaytown.com/ This is a community outreach program we do in conjunction with the Hofstra University Astronomy Department and NASA. Come and view the Sun and the Moon through our telescopes and binoculars using special filters. We may even be able to hear the Sun which has been very active lately.

Also on Saturday is the annual Custer Jamboree at the Custer Institute in Southold. www.custerobservatory.org Author Dava Sobel is the evening keynote speaker and the observatories will be open for free public viewing following, weather permitting. Pre-registration is a must for the event.

Till next time. Ad astra
