With the Long Island Championship on the line Sunday at Stony Brook University, both William Floyd and East Meadow are coming off County Championship victories in which the higher seed was dethroned.
For the Jets, it's all about clock management. Control the tempo and wait for the defense to let down their guard. That's the perfect time to strike. Freeport needs to keep their offense unpredictable. Go after vulnerabilities of the defense and don't stop.
Match-up: East Meadow vs. William Floyd, Nov. 27 at 4:30 p.m.
Venue: Stony Brook University
What's up for grabs: Long Island Championship
In-game battles: For East Meadow, stick with what works. William Floyd will be expecting a heavy run attack Sunday, but Dylan Curry has shown that he can air the ball out as well. Take occasional shots down the field, because William Floyd will take some shots of their own. For Floyd, it's about taking advantage of the Jets' secondary. Isaiah Barnes of Freeport had a big day last week, and A.J. Otranto will likely take some shots down the field.
Of course, the Jets will need to wrap up Stacey Bedell to win this game. One of the most explosive players on Long Island, East Meadow will have to force him to move side to side before making big tackles.
Former East Meadow football player Jared Biunno recently spoke to Patch about his thoughts and predictions about Sunday's contest.
Patch: I know you've commented on Patch regarding your confidence in East Meadow against a powerhouse like Floyd. Why do you think East Meadow can stick with them?
Jared: I can see how Otranto and Bedell are both incredible athletes. I just can't see East Meadow not stopping Bedell. They shut down Freeport. Granted, they have had some problems in the secondary. If they stop Bedell from getting to the second level, then there is no reason they can't win this game.
Patch: What's your prediction?
Jared: East Meadow- 34, Floyd- 24. I honestly like that score.
Patch: Who is really going to need to step up in order for East Meadow to win?
Jared: I think Curry is going to need to step up. They are going to go with the run all day, but when the time is right, Curry needs to air it out and let Healy or one of the receivers burn somebody downfield and get those big touchdown plays. I'd like to see more wide receivers get their hands on the ball, and I'd like to see some more of David Zea and James D'Elia.
