Lady Jets Overpowered By Impressive Bruins

Lady Jets can't match speed and athleticism of Lady Bruins.

The Lady Jets girls basketball team found out why the Lady Bruins of Baldwin are in first place and undefeated in the conference Friday night, as they were beaten 59-24 at .

The Jets were overpowered by a faster and more athletic team that has dominated just about every team they played this year.

"They pressured and attacked us and were able to finish on the offensive end," said East Meadow Head Coach Bethany Le Seur. "All of their players are athletic and have the ability to score. You don't usually see that from a team at the High School level."

Hero: All County guard Melissa Cohen was the leading scorer for the Lady Jets with nine points. She was also solid from the free throw line going five for nine.

Turning Point: Baldwin started to pour it on in the second quarter after being up by only five points in the first. The Lady Jets looked flustered in their offensive sets and Baldwin was able to steal the ball multiple times and take it the other way for baskets.

Quotable: "They pressured us and we weren't able to do well against their pressure,' said Le Seur. "They are all really athletic kids."

"They are a very scrappy and fast team," said leading scorer Melissa Cohen. "They double teamed us a lot and were athletic enough to take the ball away from us."

Bottom Line: It was definitely the tale of two different teams as the Lady Bruins proved to be superior in just about every category. They had quicker hands, shot better and abused East Meadow on the defensive side of the ball. To their credit the Lady Jets picked up the pace a little in the fourth quarter getting the ball to their big girl down low Jennifer Gundrum. They wouldn't have won but the score might have been closer if they utilized Gundrum a little more earlier in the game.
