Lady Jets Get Rocked by MacArthur, 61-30

East Meadow Lady Jets rallied in the third quarter but couldn't bring home the victory they were looking for.

(2-4) fell to MacArthur (5-1) in a difficult game on Tuesday evening, loosing 61-30. The Lady Generals began the game strong, with 25 points in the first quarter, and utilized their tight offense to their advantage. With a few vital slip-up’s, the Lady Jets lost control of the ball enabling MacArthur to swoop in and capitalize on the opportunity.

In the third quarter, the Lady Jets worked well off the team energy that was created from their press and scored more than half of their game points. East Meadow moved the score up to 50-22, but still did not have enough hits to catch up with their opponent. Able to move quickly with intense accuracy and responsiveness, the Lady Generals took home their fifth win in regular conference play this season.

Heroes: Senior Melissa Cohen was the stand out star for the evening. Leading her team through every quarter, Cohen handled the ball and her opponents with ease. She moved the ball eagerly to get her team the points they wanted. In the second quarter, Cohen began the rally with a two-point lay up that gave her team the momentum they needed to play catch up with the Lady Generals in the third.

Struggling a little in the first quarter, Danielle Widmann delivered a fierce game for her team and made sure to stand strong against the Generals, scoring nine points. With Cohen, she brought home some points later in the game, inspiring her team to gain some ground.

Turning Point: East Meadow came out strong in the third quarter, scoring 17 points, with four points in the first minute and a half of play alone.  Melissa Cohen led the Jets and was a tough player both offensively and defensively. Regardless, the Generals were able to work together, ensuring their 31-point victory well into the fourth quarter.

Quotable: “I thought we did well,” MacArthur Coach Kathleen Auer said. “All the girls who went in did a nice job- we executed what we wanted to do against their press and defensively against their best player.”

Bottom Line: This was an honest loss for the Jets, as MacArthur is a tough team to beat. However, they were seriously lacking during the first half of the game, scoring only five points collectively in the first and second quarters. Cohen and Widmann, along with teammate Jenna Dragoon, were able to bring some numbers to the scoreboard, though ultimately unable to match up to the Lady Generals.
