Islanders Could Be Replaced by Rangers’ Affiliate

Hockey fans on Long Island could end up swapping their Brooklyn-bound Islanders for the rival Rangers' top minor league affiliate if Cablevision's MSG Company has its way.

In a presentation on Thursday, MSG executives said they intend to bring one of their professional sports franchises to Nassau County should their proposal for a reimagined Coliseum be accepted.

The three franchises mentioned were the WNBA’s New York Liberty, the Knicks’ D-League affiliate, the Erie Bayhawks, and the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Connecticut Whale.

To add insult to injury, MSG officials said the Rangers would use the Coliseum ice for open practices each season. The Knicks would also hold open practices at the Coliseum.

Officials said that the Coliseum would also play host to a number of sporting events ranging from NCAA basketball to bull riding.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano’s Business Advisory Council will review the four respondents’ proposals -- including MSG's -- to reinvent the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
