East Meadow Resident Named Hofstra Baseball Coach

John Russo had been working with an interim tag since January, but that has since been removed.

Just four months after John Russo, a resident of East Meadow, was head baseball coach at Hofstra University, the school announced on May 7.

"John has been with the program for four years now," Interim Director of Athletics Danny McCabe said. "He has had a hand in recruiting all of the current players on the team, as well as the incoming class for 2013. John has done a great job throughout his tenure, and with the success that the team is having this season he has proven he is the right person for the position."

Russo, whose experience includes head coaching duties at St. Joseph's College in Indiana and the University of West Alabama, was promoted in January after Patrick Anderson left to school to take a job as consultant to the general manager with the Hagerstown Suns, the Single-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

"I am thrilled at the opportunity to lead the Hofstra Baseball program," said Russo. "I would like to thank President Rabinowitz and Danny McCabe for giving me the chance to be a head coach at the Division I level as it has been a career goal of mine. This season has been great and I have to give credit to our players and staff for the way they handled things. I look forward to not only making the Hofstra Baseball program successful but keeping it that way for many years to come."

Hofstra is currently 31-19 on the season, having set the single season record for wins in a season with a 15-9 win over Northeastern on May 6. Hofstra's 18-9 Colonial Athletic Association mark has the team in second place in the standings.
