East Meadow Resident Named All-League Athlete

Raquel Lopez earns the title for girls cross country.

East Meadow resident Raquel Lopez, a junior at Kellenberg Memorial High School, has been named an All-League athlete for girls cross country.

The title is awarded to athletes based on a vote of all the coaches in the NSCHSGAA League. All of the girls cross country coaches in the league vote based on the athletes' performance during the season and Lopez’s "outstanding performance" earned her the title this year.

Coach Martin Brown said Lopez has had some "crucial" performances that have helped her team, namely her 11th place finish at the Nassau Coaches Invitational at Bethpage Park in October, which helped her Kellenberg team win the "Varsity Team Title" and her 22nd place finish at the CHSAA Intersectional Meet (Catholic State Meet), which helped her team to the overall second place "team silver plaque" and a qualifying berth in the all-schools NY State Federation championship meet.

"Raquel Lopez is a multi-dimensional student-athlete," Coach Martin said. "Lopez, an NSCHSGAA All-League cross country runner, is involved in Kellenberg's S.M.A.R.T. program, an apostolic outreach program for neighborhood elementary students; she is an accomplished pianist; and an 'A' student. As her All-American half-miler teammate and Captain Jazmine Fray says, 'Raquel brings such a positive dimension to our team...she is never without a smile, day in and day out.'"

Lopez will serve as a varsity cross country captain next year.
