Question of the Day: Attendees of Newbridge Road School

Weigh in on a daily hot topic.

Recently, I received the following email from an graduate.

"Hello Michael! I am Camille Tucciarone-Tornello from the class '69 at EMHS. I left in 1980 for 'the wilds" of Smithtown. I attended Newbridge Road School. It became apartments in the  late 70's.

I am wondering what happened to the former students. I have been in touch with some through Facebook and Classmates, but where are the others? We lived at 2483 7th Ave off of Newbridge Road. Back then, East Meadow was a very different place."

This leads to today's question of the day? Did you attend Newbridge Road School? If so, what do you remember about it?

Yes I remember Ithink Mrs Haven lived in the house right behind the store on 7th. allso the drug store back then was called Zinn Pharmacy the Republcan Club in that group stores is where our wedding reception was held in 1956 . This Newbridge Rd . school topic brought back a lot of good memories .
Camlle March 31, 2012 at 07:37 pm
Al Scott.... I remember Mrs Havens and her son Johnny living on Star St off 7th Ave . The pharmacy was and I believe still is called Meadow Pharmacy and then owned by the late Marvin Brass.. ... We hung out behind NRS .. I left area in 1981, mom sold home in 2004 .. It was a very different place by time she left . I have fond memories of NRS ....
Al Scott March 31, 2012 at 11:22 pm
The original pharmacy was before Marvin . Our hang out was in front of Havens untill we got old enough to drive . Your right Mrs. Havens son was Johnny I couldnt remember his name a senior moment I guess .
Camlle March 31, 2012 at 11:28 pm
When were those stores built? There was an alley way between 2 seperate group of stores. Looked like the group where pharmacy, butchers and 2? others were bulit in front of a old home .. Johnny had red hair...He killed himself after mom passed. Very sad .. My parents lived next door to Dr Shenberg , faced parking lot .
Camlle March 31, 2012 at 11:29 pm
I rarely am in area any longer .
Mike Wiiliams June 11, 2012 at 04:17 pm
Havens had Mrs Havens, Al Gardener and Johnny Havens in it. Joe D'Benedetto had the deli.
Joe Bruno the shoe store, I cant remember the name of the Dry Cleaner, Marvin Brass had the Drugstore, Mr Hauck had the barber shop, I remember Bill the Butcher, the republican club, Carvel across the Street, Danny's Pizza pride. one or two different bars, Ruths Hair Salon ( which in the mid 70's became the shortlived Shamrock Deli),the lot on 8th ave and Newbridge. I went from 71 to 76 I was in the last graduating sixth grade. I remember before they made apartments out of the school. it used to be a live perfomance venue called Theatre Tonight. It didn't last long.
Mike Wiiliams June 11, 2012 at 04:22 pm
Johnny Haven didn't intentionally kill himself.
He took his Moms death hard and drank heavily. The heavy drinking subsequently took his health and his life. He was a good Man, and would let responsible kids run tabs if they were short on money. He taught me how to be responsible with credit at a very early age.
Camlle June 11, 2012 at 08:37 pm
I agree , Mike,, He was a nice guy ....
Mike Wiiliams June 11, 2012 at 11:24 pm
He truly was a nice guy. In 1976 he protected me from a bunch of bullies that beat the snot out of me in front of his store. He would let me read the magazines, without paying for them, while having a soda and eating one of those pretzel sticks you could grab out of a cylindrical container on the counter top.
I think of him from time to time and I have prayed rosaries for him. He was kind and benevolent. Even with his mourning for his Mom If there is another spiritual plane after this existence, I look forward to seeing him again.
Camlle June 11, 2012 at 11:27 pm
..May he RIP ...Do you still live in area? I moved away in 81...
Mike Wiiliams June 12, 2012 at 01:07 am
Moved away in 85, from time to time I visit.
It looks nothing like it used to. Reminds me of Queens in the late 70's and early 80's A lot of houses are rental or dual rental units. Not really a neighborhood anymore If I remember correctly, Dr Shenberg was on 7th and Newbridge facing Havens. I used to shovel his snow in the mid to late 70's Even then he was up there in age.
Camlle June 12, 2012 at 02:40 am
My mom sold in 2004.. BTW , we lived next door to Dr Shenberg, so you know the house . He lived to be very old, outliving his wife..You are right .It s so much like Queens .

I'm stumbling in on your wonderful conversations - wow. I went to NR Elementary School for K, first and second grades, and I lived on Alder Avenue. My recollection of our neighborhood, the school is nostalgic, to say the least. Life was simpler, moms were home, and it was safe for me to walk to school - the teachers were professional - o, my teachers were so pretty, I always thought as a child (now I am a teacher, and the profession doesn't compare now with what it was then - not even close).
And so, I wonder if there is anyone out there who may remember Mrs. Marilyn Turnwall, Kindergarten teacher for me in 1966 (still remember her favorite color was lavender - thought that was soo "dreamy" to have such a color as your favorite), or Miss Elizabeth S(c?)herring, first grade teacher for me in 1967 (who nicknamed me Lizzy Tish after her own childhood nickname since we're both named Elizabeth), or Mrs. Jacobs (flaming red hair/very sharp dresser! :) - I've wondered about them over the years more than I'd ever imagined I would. Miss Sherring was only in her 20s then, while the others where older. Mr. Revett - I clearly remember him - and, somewhere above, I read that he's no longer with us. That saddens me. (continuing ... :)
Life in EM - in much of Long Island - during the 60s always has and will remind me of how folks are portrayed in Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie ... just love it. That's how my neighborhood was. And so for any bits and pieces that can be offered, I would welcome them. So hard to come by any facts simply because I only went to NR Elem for 3 years, though I lived in EM longer. Bohacks - was that the name of the grocery store close to school? Also looking to reconnect with a childhood friend - Donna Roberts - who also lived on Alder Avenue. We always walked to school together, with our veeery fashionable book bags - looked like small suitcases (minus the wheels - that would've made life too easy :). Thanks, all, for putting a smile on my face. :)
Camlle September 7, 2012 at 01:22 am
I remember Mrs Turnwall , not Mrs Jacobs or Miss Sherring ,,, I was out by 63.. I am sure they had new teachers by 66.. Mr Revett passed around 2002 , in his mid 90's .. He was living upstate .. Goggle Harley E. Revett .. Do you remember Mrs McIntosh? Mr Engel ? He was my 5th grade and favorite teacher.. I miss the simpler times . NRS was a unqiue school . We did things no other school in EM did.. On Sunday , we were discussing how we buried a time capsule under the flag pole.. Must of been 1962 . We also planted a tree on Arbor Day. The Halloween parades. Field trips all over ... So many great memories . ....

Camille, thanks so much for your reply - I'm thrilled that someone remembers Mrs. Turnwall! (got a tear in my eye!) I've googled her name, as with the other teachers I mentioned, and looked on similar search websites. I've tried locating folks with those before - you pay a minimal fee and they give you a history of all the places they lived ... but I came up empty handed (even though I could confirm the locations) and so I hesitate to try again. I will, however, join you on FB!!! - made a note of it!! :)
Elisabeth Achauer September 8, 2012 at 01:13 am
... Halloween parades - omg! I have pictures of them - I loved those parades! Proud as anything, I was, to participate in them. NRS was, indeed, a unique school. Do you remember the playground area? Those unusually shaped (cement?) stones that you could play/sit on? I always thought they were so fascinating as a child. :O).
And, yes, simpler times ... a shame we have to work so hard to regain something that we so took for granted then. Mrs. McIntosh? Maybe? But what grade? I was only there from '66-'69, K-2 - yet the name does sound familiar. I can't believe you remember Mrs. Turnwall - that makes my day. Truly! :)

Many teachers retired when NRS was closed around 76.. Others transfered to various elem schools..It was made into apts , as it still it,, Heritage Square. Google it . Happy to know you will join us on NRS fb page !
Camlle September 8, 2012 at 01:18 am
BTW ,,,if you still have class pics , post them on NRS page !
Elisabeth Achauer September 10, 2012 at 06:29 am
hi camille - googled heritage square apts. the other day - some of the structure looks very familiar; some doesn't. i can't wait to go back someday - hopefully soon - to NY, to EM, to see for myself. i did google mr. revett's name and found information about him and come to find out he was president of NYSTRA (new york state teachers' association) - my father was a teacher in NY for years, getting the NYSTRA newsletters ... if only i'd looked a little closer - it could've been that mr. revett was president during that time! what a small world ... (thanks, camille :) - do you still live in EM?
Elisabeth Achauer September 10, 2012 at 07:20 am

I was at NRS frm K through 6th. I know I was there in 1963 because of the JFK assassination. I had Mrs. White in K (whose husband dies that year) ; Miss Combs, mrs Harris with whom I am still in touch, and Mr Ronal Rotella. I was I the EAP class. We did 4th & 5th in one year and 6th the next. Everyone in my family remembers all the songs. Mr Revett was the one who had us doing plays every week. Looking back, it was amazing, though a lot for the teachers--2 plays a year. And a Christmas play AND a 6th grade show!
My folks are still I'm EM and I'm back at least annually. Newbridge Road is wide. The businesses change all the time. Glad I found this site. I'll look into the NRS Facebook page. Thanks!

I went to Newbridge in the early 60's. We lived on Argyle Road next to a classmate named Irene Dale Hall. I remember one teacher from the junior high - Mr. Manafla.
