Recently, I received the following email from an graduate.
"Hello Michael! I am Camille Tucciarone-Tornello from the class '69 at EMHS. I left in 1980 for 'the wilds" of Smithtown. I attended Newbridge Road School. It became apartments in the late 70's.
I am wondering what happened to the former students. I have been in touch with some through Facebook and Classmates, but where are the others? We lived at 2483 7th Ave off of Newbridge Road. Back then, East Meadow was a very different place."
This leads to today's question of the day? Did you attend Newbridge Road School? If so, what do you remember about it?
Joe Bruno the shoe store, I cant remember the name of the Dry Cleaner, Marvin Brass had the Drugstore, Mr Hauck had the barber shop, I remember Bill the Butcher, the republican club, Carvel across the Street, Danny's Pizza pride. one or two different bars, Ruths Hair Salon ( which in the mid 70's became the shortlived Shamrock Deli),the lot on 8th ave and Newbridge. I went from 71 to 76 I was in the last graduating sixth grade. I remember before they made apartments out of the school. it used to be a live perfomance venue called Theatre Tonight. It didn't last long.
He took his Moms death hard and drank heavily. The heavy drinking subsequently took his health and his life. He was a good Man, and would let responsible kids run tabs if they were short on money. He taught me how to be responsible with credit at a very early age.
I think of him from time to time and I have prayed rosaries for him. He was kind and benevolent. Even with his mourning for his Mom If there is another spiritual plane after this existence, I look forward to seeing him again.
It looks nothing like it used to. Reminds me of Queens in the late 70's and early 80's A lot of houses are rental or dual rental units. Not really a neighborhood anymore If I remember correctly, Dr Shenberg was on 7th and Newbridge facing Havens. I used to shovel his snow in the mid to late 70's Even then he was up there in age.

And so, I wonder if there is anyone out there who may remember Mrs. Marilyn Turnwall, Kindergarten teacher for me in 1966 (still remember her favorite color was lavender - thought that was soo "dreamy" to have such a color as your favorite), or Miss Elizabeth S(c?)herring, first grade teacher for me in 1967 (who nicknamed me Lizzy Tish after her own childhood nickname since we're both named Elizabeth), or Mrs. Jacobs (flaming red hair/very sharp dresser! :) - I've wondered about them over the years more than I'd ever imagined I would. Miss Sherring was only in her 20s then, while the others where older. Mr. Revett - I clearly remember him - and, somewhere above, I read that he's no longer with us. That saddens me. Life in EM - in much of Long Island - during the 60s always has and will remind me of how folks are portrayed in Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie ... just love it. That's how my neighborhood was. And so for any bits and pieces that can be offered, I would welcome them. So hard to come by any facts simply because I only went to NR Elem for 3 years, though I lived in EM longer. Bohacks - was that the name of the grocery store close to school? Also looking to reconnect with a childhood friend - Donna Roberts - who also lived on Alder Avenue. We always walked to school together, with our veeery fashionable book bags - looked like small suitcases (minus the wheels - that would've made life too easy :). Thanks, all, for putting a smile on my face. :)
And, yes, simpler times ... a shame we have to work so hard to regain something that we so took for granted then. Mrs. McIntosh? Maybe? But what grade? I was only there from '66-'69, K-2 - yet the name does sound familiar. I can't believe you remember Mrs. Turnwall - that makes my day. Truly! :)
My folks are still I'm EM and I'm back at least annually. Newbridge Road is wide. The businesses change all the time. Glad I found this site. I'll look into the NRS Facebook page. Thanks!
