East Meadow School District Cancels February Vacation Due to Sandy

Students will be in classes the week of Feb. 18-22 to make up for days missed by the storm.

Students in the East Meadow School District will not have a February vacation due to missed days from Hurricane Sandy and the November Nor'easter.

A message was posted on the district's website on Friday, informing parents of calendar revisions. Students will now have classes on Tuesday, Feb. 19 to Friday Feb. 22.

Monday, June 24 and Tuesday June 25 will now be the superintendent's conference/staff development days.

Do you agree with the district's decision to cancel February break? Tell us in the comments below.

They have to make up for the missed days so it either cancel winter break or add a week at the end of the school year. When I was a kid and went to East meadow schools we did not have a winter break, just a day off for Lincoln's birthday and a day off for Washington's birthday (and they were on the actual day not on a Monday)

I have no problem sending the kids to school on winter break.. they had off , what, 7 extra days.. so it stinks but yeah.. they have to make them up.. so I am all for it.

I think it's a fair decision.....however...don't understand the June 24, 25th Supt. Conference days....why do teachers have to return after ending the school year with students?

My problem is that they pulled the trigger too late and I worry that parents that had vacation plans are going to go away regardless, thus lowering the attendance rolls for the days anyway and perhaps not making the percentage to get the full foundation aid for the school day any way. Every day lost costs the district and the taxpayer just over 144K. I don't know why the Superintendent and the Board did not act sooner like many of their peers. Commissioner King made it clear no waivers unless you cancel vacation first.

Most airlines are letting people change their vacation flights without penalty.. so if parents/teachers still go on their trips so be it.. if attendance is low , oh well.. its a no win situation.. nobody could've predicted how bad damage the storm caused.. and dont teachers clean out their classrooms after the kids are done.. so they get two days after the "meetings" are done fro the day to clean their classrooms..

Ok with the decision but feel it should have been made a lot sooner.

I agree with the district's decision, but I would like to know what took them so long to come to it.

I'm surprised they cancelled February's break instead of Easter. Everyone knows that President's week is a prime time for major snowfalls. What's going to happen then, they'll have to make-up the make-up days.

i thought they should have done away with this break many years ago it was suppose to be a one time break if you have a child or children that when to east meadow schools in the 80"s you might remember
