East Meadow School Budget Vote Set for Tuesday

Both the budget-to-budget and tax levy increase stayed under 2 percent for the second consecutive year.

The time has come for East Meadow School District residents to vote yay or nay for the proposed 2011-12 East Meadow School Budget.

The final proposed budget-to-budget increase stands at 1.73 percent, and the school's "rainy day" fund prevented staff and program cuts. Class sizes will be maintained "within district guidelines" as well.

"Our board of education and administration has worked very hard to put together this spending plan, which we believe is fair to our students, staff and to the community at large,” Superintendent Louis DeAngelo said at a recent communications meeting.

The proposed tax levy increase for East Meadow residents is 1.62 percent. This is the second straight year that the district has kept the increase under 2 percent.

Despite having the "rainy day" fund available, the district still had to make a number of cuts. Most notably, all of East Meadow's American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) funding was cut (over $3 million) and the district's Capital Funding Budget was cut just under 36 percent. Also, there was a big bump of over $1.3 million in programs for children with disabilities. Employee benefits were raised this year over $175,000 as well.
