Councilman Hudes Leads Government Class at East Meadow High School

Students spent a day learning about different levels of the government and about the Town of Hempstead's role in the community.

Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes recently led a day of government classes at East Meadow High School in an effort to instruct students about the Town of Hempstead’s role in the community.

“As the Town of Hempstead provides its residents with 90 percent of their daily services, it is important for young people to learn about the functions of government,” Hudes said. “I am proud to educate our children on this very important topic.”

Hudes discussed the different levels of government, the separation of powers and explained the legislative process.  He also described the various programs and facilities that the town has to offer.

“From sanitation and recycling collection and maintaining safe roads to providing senior citizen programs and offering one of the largest park systems in the United States, Hempstead Town offers a vast array of services for our residents,”  he said.

At the conclusion of his presentation, Hudes held an open forum with students, discussing laws and talking about ways to improve the community.

“I am delighted to bring government right into the classroom and to give students an opportunity to learn first-hand how government works," he said.
