Clarke Student Advances to Regional Spelling Bee

Naman Shakrani will compete in Scripps Spelling Bee at Hofstra University.

Naman Shakrani, a Clarke Middle School student recently placed first in the school’s 2013 spelling bee and will advance to the regional competition of the Scripps Spelling Bee at Hofstra University, according to the East Meadow School District website. 

Shakrani came in first place after spelling “philodendron."

Before the competition, the middle school students were tested and 27 qualified as finalists. The intense seven-round bee lasted about an hour until a winner was named.

Shakrani said that he pictured each word in his head before he spelled it.

“I ask my parents and my brother to keep quizzing me,” he added. “I also ask for all of the information about the word, even if I know how to spell it already.”
