Barnum Woods Makes the Most out of Technology

New tools are making the teachers' jobs easier and the students' experience more interactive.

is using technology to take the learning experience to another level.

Principal Gregory Bottari, Assistant Principal Kelly M. Brian and Literacy Coach Jaime Austin discussed the ways in which children at Barnum Woods are taking advantage of new tools to enhance their time in the classroom at the recent board of education meeting at the .

According to the East Meadow School District mission statement, the goal is to "acquire the knowledge and skills needed to lead a productive, responsible and culturally enriched life in the 21st century."

"I have to thank the board of education for helping us get this technology," Bottari said. "In many districts, and I have been a part of several, we do not have this type of equipment."

The first piece of equipment on display was the TI-Nspire Navigational System, which is a hand-held calculator that is used by the students. This wireless, interactive system immediately displays information on Smart Board. The software analyzes and graphs data results and also targets the needs of all learners based on the data.

"This affords students the opportunity to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses, while still retaining their anonymity," Brian said.

The next tool students and teachers are taking advantage of is Classroom Performances Systems, which are wireless remotes used to allow students to click answers to questions generated by their teachers. This immediate feedback allows lessons to be differentiated as lessons progress.

"This provides teachers the opportunity to analyze data, which helps drive instruction," Austin said. "It also promotes whole-class participation while highlighting individual needs."

Students are also getting acclimated with the digital age as well, as teachers have created integrated units on Georgia O'Keefe, national park landscapes, famous New York landmarks and personal time lines. Children can also share their work with Windows Photo Story.

Educators are also having students work with Pixie, which combined artwork with text and voice recording, making it the perfect canvas for digital learners. It helps all students produce high-level work, according to Brian, as it "provides a sense of pride in their abilities and fosters their determination to achieve."

Students are also using web cams, Sype and sites for learning to enhance their digital experience.

"Thank you so much for sharing this with us," Superintendent Louis DeAngelo said. "Keep up the good work, and good luck this year."
