Suozzi Wins Primary, Targets Mangano

Four years later, Suozzi looks to win his old job back.

Now for the rematch.

Four years after he was stunningly defeated by Ed Mangano, former County Executive Tom Suozzi will get his chance at revenge after defeating Adam Haber in the Democratic primary on Tuesday night.

Suozzi pulled in about 59 percent of the vote, according to the latest Nassau County Board of Elections tally.

For Suozzi, it's a chance at redemption. A relatively popular county executive for much of his eight years in office, Suozzi led in nearly every public poll leading up to election day in 2009, but Mangano beat him by less than 400 votes.

Suozzi went to work in the private sector, before making making his political return this year.

This time, however, he will face County Executive Mangano, who is running for re-election as a tax fighting, jobs-developing incumbent with a track record for cutting government spending.

Mangano boasts that he cut $18 million by cutting patronage jobs, and has reduced the county workforce by 1,776 employees. Mangano also said the high county cost of living is why he eliminated a 16.5 percent property tax planned by Suozzi.

But Suozzi argues that Mangano's fiscal leadership has failed and taken the county "deeper in debt," pointing directly at $2 billion in new borrowing. He has added that under his watch, the county reduced borrowing and debt, all while saving the county from fiscal ruin.
