Sound Off: TSA to Allow Small Knives on Planes

Agency to lift ban on several items that has been in place since Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The Transportation Security Administration will soon begin to allow passengers to carry items such as small knives and sporting equipment on planes for the first time since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

As of April 25, passengers will be allowed to bring knives that do not lock or have blades that are 2.36 inches or six centimeters in length and less than a half-inch in width, according to the TSA’s website.

Additionally, some sports equipment – including novelty-sized and toy baseball bats, billiard cues, ski poles, hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks and a maximum of two golf clubs – can be included in carry-on baggage.

“This is part of an overall risk-based security approach, which allows Transportation Security officers to better focus their efforts on finding higher threat items, such as explosives,” a TSA statement read.

But box cutters, razor blades and liquids more than 3.4 ounces will still be banned from planes.
