Murray Honored by LICA, Meets With HUD Secretary

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray was presented with an award by Long Island Contractors’ Association, Inc. (LICA) Executive Director Marc Herbst at its Annual Nassau County Local Government Breakfast Meeting held at the Caryle on the Green in Farmingdale.

The purpose of the local government breakfast meeting was to discuss the region’s public works capital programs for the upcoming construction season as well as other concerns.

Murray Meets With HUD Secretary

Supervisor Kate Murray Friday met with HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, Chairman of the Federal Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force, and advocated for additional federal assistance to help tens of thousands of residents in Hempstead Town impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

Murray’s one-on-one conversation with Donovan occurred at the first meeting of the TaskForce’s Advisory Group, held at the Ted Weiss Federal Building in New York City. Additionally,Murray met with several key officials representing areas that, like Hempstead Town, were also severely impacted by Sandy. Those officials included Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, Long Beach City Council President Scott Mandel and Long Beach City Manager Jack Schnirman.

“I will continue to fight for a fair share of federal funding to assist Hempstead Town neighbors who continue to rebuild from the devastation left behind by Sandy,” Murray said.“Advocating for Hempstead Town, which was hit especially hard, is an ongoing priority for me as supervisor of America’s largest township. I was pleased to meet with HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan and look forward to future meetings of the Advisory Group.”

The Federal Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force, established through a presidential executive order, is charged with providing the coordination necessary to support the objectives of the rebuilding effort. Murray is a member of the Advisory Group, which comprises state, local and tribal officials to advise the Task Force on strategic measures related to Federal Sandy rebuilding efforts.
Since Sandy severely damaged Hempstead Town’s shoreline communities, Murrayestablished several helpful programs and initiatives for residents as they rebuild their homes andrestore their lives. Among those projects, Murray directed the Building Department to waive feesfor Sandy-related structural home repairs that conform to original dimensions and specifications,commonly referred to as “in-kind” repairs and replacements.

“We are doing our part at the town level to assist Sandy victims during this difficult time,”Murray said. “I will do my best to gain additional federal assistance that our residents need and deserve as they recover.”

When bringing items, please follow these simple guidelines: Wrap leaking containers in newspaper and place in a plastic bag or larger container. Make sure all caps and lids are tight. Place items securely in a box for transportation. Use newspaper or cardboard to keep items from tipping or hitting each other. Place chemicals which may react with each other in separate areas of the vehicle. Do not leave products in a hot, unventilated vehicle for an extended period of time. Do not smoke near chemical products. Wear rubber gloves when handling containers.
