Election 2012: McKevitt to Win 17th Assembly District Race

The East Meadow native maintains strong lead against Democratic challenger Kevin C. Brady.

Republican Tom McKevitt was poised to defeat Democratic challenger Kevin C. Brady in the 17th Assembly District race Tuesday.

McKevitt, an East Meadow resident, captured 16,757 votes, with 71 percent of precincts reporting as of 12:26 a.m. Wednesday. His opponent earned 12,197 votes.

He was first elected to the Assembly in a special election in February 2006, to succeed Maureen O’Connell who became Nassau County Clerk. He was re-elected in November 2006 and November 2008.

He has been asked to deliver numerous lectures on land use and zoning enforcement throughout the state. He is a member of the East Meadow Kiwanis Club and the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, as well as a  mentor to students at the Woodland Middle School and coach of the Holy Trinity Diocesan High School Mock Trial Team. He is the recipient of the George Estabrook Award for service as a distinguished alumnus of Hofstra University.

The new 17th Assembly District includes East Meadow, Levittown, Farmingdale, Plainedge, Bethpage, North Massapequa, Uniondale and portions of North Bellmore and North Merrick.
