LED Lighting and Crosswalk Warnings Becoming Fixtures in East Meadow

Nassau County is taking precautions to keep the roads and residents safe.

There are many intersections in East Meadow that have been the site of accidents, and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano has taken a step to keep residents safe.

One of Mangano's more significant undertakings to improve condition has been the conversion of more than 1,800 intersections to LED lighting and crosswalk warnings, which include a countdown to let people that cross the street know when the signals are going to change.

One such intersection of local interest, located at Merrick Avenue and Bellmore Avenue in East Meadow, has seen plenty of crashes, the latest being . Since then, the new system has been installed.

“There is nothing more important than keeping our residents safe,” Mangano said. “We will continue to introduce new ways to ensure people can use our roadways with no fear.”

Another intersection that now has the new feature is Prospect Avenue and East Meadow Avenue, and Mangano says this is all part of a county-wide initiative of road safety.

“Nassau County has more than 2,000 lane miles and 300 roads,” Mangano said. “We want to make every one as safe as possible. Of course, that mission will benefit from the cooperation of pedestrians and drivers. Please use caution when crossing or driving. We will do our part. Help us keep you safe.”
