Town of Hempstead's Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (STOP) Day

Councilman Gary Hudes and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray announce the Town of Hempstead's next upcoming STOP day, Sun., Dec. 12 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Eisenhower Park field 3 in East Meadow.

STOP stands for "Stop Throwing Out Pollutants," a program that enables homeowners to safely dispose of many hazardous items routinely used in the home. The improper disposal of many household products may result in the contamination of Long Island's groundwater.

Items that MAY be brought include aerosol cans, ammonia, anti-freeze, bleach, bug and rodent killers, car batteries, car tires (off the rims), chemistry sets, disinfectants, drain cleaners, fertilizers with herbicides, household batteries, kerosene, latex and oil-based paint, oven cleaners, photography chemicals, polishes and wood preservatives, spot removers, pool chemicals, varnish, waste oil, "Weed-B-Gone" or Silvex (2,4,5-T) weed killers.

Items that MAY NOT be brought include ammunition, explosives, fireworks, infectious or medical waste, propane tanks, radioactive materials or unlabeled materials.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ELECTRONIC RECYCLING ITEMS WILL ONLY BE COLLECTED AT E-CYCLE EVENTS (NEXT E-CYCLE EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE ON SUN., MARCH 13, 2011 IN LEVITTOWN).

The next two STOP dates scheduled are Sat., March 26 in East Meadow and Sun. April 10 in Long Beach.
