Election 2011: Bonilla Re-Elected Over Anchin for Town Clerk

Republican incumbent Mark Bonilla will serve another two-year term as clerk after defeating Democrat Steve Anchin.

Republican Mark Bonilla retained his position as Hempstead Town Clerk Tuesday after defeating Democrat Steve Anchin.

Bonilla, of Bellmore, captured 63.12 of the total vote against the non-incumbent, Anchin.

"My victory and that of my colleagues on election day is really a victory for neighbors," Bonilla told Patch. "Our success is a mandate to continue providing the best services at the lowest possible cost. Thank you to all of the residents of Hempstead Town."

Bonilla made history in 2003 by becoming the first Hispanic to be elected to a town-wide position in the Town of Hempstead. This is the first public official position he has sought and held.

The two candidates made headlines in recent weeks after Anchin accused Bonilla's "Senior ID Card" program of being "dangerous" due to ever-changing medication and prescription information.

The Town of Hempstead responded Monday by saying that no such information exists on the ID cards, specifically for that reason.
