Edward Kraus, commissioner of the North Bellmore Fire Department and a North Bellmore native, is running for Nassau County legislator in the 13th district, which covers the areas of North Bellmore, North Merrick, East Meadow and North Wantagh. He is running on the Democratic ticket.

Presiding officer Norma Gonsalves, R-East Meadow, currently represents the district.

"The current state of the county is gross compared to what it could be and should be," 31-year-old Kraus said. "I want to be part of the solution."

Kraus grew up in North Bellmore and attended Dinkelmeyer Elementary School and Grand Avenue Middle School.

Before taking on the role of fire commissioner, he has been dedicated to the North Bellmore Fire Department for more than 10 years, serving as a lieutenant, captain and as a chief with the department from 2008 to 2012.

He lives in North Bellmore with his wife, Jennifer, and their sons, Edward III and Joseph.

"I have a young family and that is important to me," Kraus said. "There are a lot of things that are stagnant in the county and what I want is to make a difference."

Kraus is holding his first fundraiser Aug. 22 at Governor's Comedy Club in Levittown beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 in advance; sponsorships are available. RSVP to EdKraus2013@gmail.com or 225-2732 if interested.
