Dogs in Fighting Ring Brought to North Hempstead Animal Shelter

Woman arrested; 18 pit bulls under evaluation in Port Washington.

A New Cassel woman was arrested on dog fighting charges after Nassau County Police say they discovered wounded pit bulls, a homemade dog fighting ring, syringes, penicillin and steroids in her home.

In total, 18 dogs were brought to the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter in Port Washington.

Nassau County detectives say they responded to a noise complaint at 721 Broadway in New Cassel at 11 p.m. Friday when they saw nearly 20 people running out of a garage behind the house. Inside the garage, police discovered the wooden dog fighting ring that contained two pit bulls in “wounded, bloody condition.”

When police went inside the house they met Monica Christopher, 38, who resides there. Police observed dog pens throughout the house, all containing pit bulls, many with “wounds to the face, nose and body.”

Police also found two treadmills that they say were used to train dogs for fighting.

The Town of North Hempstead Department of Public Safety Animal Control brought the 18 dogs to the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter in Port Washington, where they are being evaluated.

Police had no additional information on the dog’s evaluation at press time.

Christopher was placed under arrest and is being charged with three counts of prohibition animal fighting. She was arraigned on Sunday in First District Court, Hempstead.

I hope that people take into consideration that SHE and her associates are the real monstrous animals....not the dogs. it's THESE very people that give PitBulls a bad name...and it HAS TO STOP! I have worked with Pits before at shelters doing obedience training and leash training...they are very intelligent, loyal and affectionate animals. Their history as family pets goes back to the United Kingdom when they were known as THE NANNY DOG because they will defend their home and owners till the death if they had to from intruders. They have been known to be very protective of children as well. There are no bad dogs...just bad owners. So please..I urge anyone who has heard about this story, if you can...give one of these poor animals a chance to prove the stereotypes and the rep is completely wrong. Thank You, ~B~ Brooklyn, NY
