Ban-boo: Hempstead Town Adopts Bamboo Ban

A number of residents have complained about neighboring bamboo damaging property.

The Hempstead Town Board unanimously adopted legislation at Tuesday's board meeting that will stem the planting, growing or maintaining of bamboo plants on local properties in the township.

Town officials are responding to the complaints of residents who have had to deal with invasive bamboo encroaching on their properties from adjoining parcels.

According to the town, in recent months, many residents have displayed evidence of damaged tree roots, pipes, sidewalks and even foundations as a result of out-of-control bamboo growth. The root structure found in many types of bamboo tends to expand horizontally, making the plant difficult to maintain and more likely to cause damage to its surrounding area than other types of plants.

Residents have documented bamboo roots migrating from neighboring properties and literally sprouting through and cracking garage floors, sidewalks and driveways. For some homeowners, the damage has cost them thousands of dollars to remediate.

The town confirmed that those who have bamboo on their property must come into compliance with the law and that the town will work with neighbors to facilitate compliance.

This law will be enforced by the Town of Hempstead Department of Sanitation. If residents have a complaint about bamboo plants encroaching on their properties, they are urged to call the department at 516-378-4210.

What do you think of the new law? Tell us in the comments.

I'm glad I read the article. I saw some bamboo plants in the lobby of LIJ Hospital growing indoors and I thought it was beautiful and was condsidering planting some. I had no idea that they are so invasive. I guess if I want a bamboo plant even indoors I will get an artificial one. I do not want to take any chances. Thanks for the info.

Buy all the Bamboo you want.. Dont let the TOH fools scare you....

Unless you have this problem you have no idea what you are talking about - I have a neighbor who has bamboo on the other side of my fence - guess what every weekend my husband and I have to dig up half OUR backyard thanks to this inconsiderate neighbor who didnot know the damage this plant can do. I have a built in pool and we had to dig a foot off the wall a horizontal root four ft long!!! Thanks TOH he know has no choice but to get rid of it - I did not ask for this to be grown on MY property....
Marcella July 15, 2012 at 03:44 pm
The bamboo plant is beautiful and CAN be controlled and maintained in a yard with proper preparation and forethought, you cant just buy and stick in in the ground.
I have it planted in my backyard and its contained. You need to dig a trench of 3 feet the length of where the bambo will be planted and place a barrier, I have a thick 3 feet deep into the ground black vinyl? I forget the material but you can google it. fill nearly to the top with dirt then plant the bamboo on the top 1 foot. Their roots are not like trees they dont go down they go horizontal and wont harm pipes etc if they stay in their contained space. Its easy to see and prune them if one whizome hops over the barrier, new sprouts are very delicate and I can just take a spade and slice it easily out if needs be. http://www.bamboogarden.com/barrier%20installation.htm#barrier enclosure

My neighbor did not contain the bamboo - so how do I get rid of it permanently. Now thanks to TOH he has to get rid of his, lets see how he likes digging up the little shoots that appear every few days - and if you don't it starts to be like a spear that can go thru a childs foot!!
Rev. Bob Walderman July 15, 2012 at 09:31 pm
I hope the TOH will consider the difference between the 'running' bamboo, which is highly invasive, and the 'clumping' type which is not. While one should be a good neighbor and be vigilant about what grows onto their neighbors property, one wonders if this will be extended to other, more common invasive plants such as Trumpet vines, Rosa Ragusa, mint and such.
Anne July 15, 2012 at 09:46 pm
I think the TOH has been dealing with a number of irate neighbors who have been subjected to this distructive plant - you cannot even rip it out with your hands you have to dig it out sometimes many feet down to get the whole shoot out if not it grows a couple of inches each day. It's real fun to crawl under the deck of our house to get these roots that are coming up between the boards and I have heard they can go thru the foundation of the house - we get them before they get that close!! We have given our neighbor , nicely, many opportunities to fix the damage he has done we just want it off our property - we'llshow him a copy of this article and hope he does the right thing, or we'll be calling the number.

All I can say right now is we have been "Bamboo-zled" by the politicians......
You know what to do when it comes time to vote... Political ineptness should not be tolerated..... How about working on more important issues...
S.Klein July 17, 2012 at 02:00 pm
Bamboo is a serious problem. You should first send your neighbor a certified letter telling him you will find him accountable for the damage to your property if he doesnt take care of it... Now that the law has passed, report it and document any damage done. Your neighbor should be liable for the damages... Once it comes to money you will see how fast your neighbor will change his mind about taking care of it. People dont realize the damge it can do to a child if he falls on the growing shoots sprouting in your yard because of its growing in the house behind you and spreading rapidly.

Mrs. Revere-
There is also a huge outdoor bamboo colony outside the NS/LIJ Manhasset Campus. They have to use steel guidewires to keep it back. Jon

I'm sorry Rebecca but I don't think the air quality issue is a good argument for saving a school child from getting killed while walking across the street. I mean really. It is the tri state area. Do you honestly think that the air quality can get worse? Ridiculous. Stop signs do work because police can enforce them.
MAY July 19, 2012 at 10:58 pm
Except when it backfires and ruins the foundation of your own house. trust me
MAY July 19, 2012 at 11:00 pm
Linda, please message me and I will share my experience with you. It costs thousands to get rid of and that was only with about two years worth of growth. Awful. Don't listen to this guy Paul. The spikes that grow out of the ground are sharp enough to kill a child if they fell on it. My kids couldn't play in the yard until we saved the money to have it taken out. You can't do it yourself either. You need a backhoe. Terrible. You can plant it in pots though but it has to be the breed that doesn't grow off of runners and tubers. It is clumping or something. Still very invasive.
MAY July 19, 2012 at 11:03 pm
Anne this is why when we moved in we got rid of ours as a courtesy to our new neighbors rather than just cutting it out. It was in EVERYONE's yard. I pity you. I understand how this plant can ruin lives. There is no way to kill it either. Perhaps you can have a trench dug along the property line and place PVC in it as a barrier to protect your pool. It is a pretty reasonable investment to protect a much larger one. Once that stuff hits your pool it is going to be a nightmare. I am so sorry.
MAY July 19, 2012 at 11:04 pm
Yes but you did it responsibly. Most do it wrecklessly
MAY July 19, 2012 at 11:05 pm
Yup! I couldn't let my children play in my yard. THose spears get to be an inch round and then become a danger because they can kill a child if they fell on it.
MAY July 19, 2012 at 11:06 pm
Ann we had to dig 5 feet down to what I call the "God Chute" to get the last and final piece that the excavators missed. After that luckily we didn't have any more problems althogh I am sure there is still some there living dormant.
MAY July 19, 2012 at 11:08 pm
Would the neighbor be grandfathered in though?

HUGE GOVERNMENT OVERREACH on a GRASS ROOTS LEVEL (pun intended)!!! A new law passed in the TOWN OF HEMPTEAD forced me to remove 150 feet of BAMBOO that I planted in 2010. Bamboo was PERFECTLY LEGAL at that time, and I even went to the added expense of having a PROFESSIONAL BAMBOO ROOT BARRIER installed 24 inches underground to prevent the spread of the roots. Now the Town of Hempstead passed a law BANNING BAMBOO. There is no grandfather clause and no provision for people who planted the Bamboo responsibly using a Bamboo root blocker. This law just cost me $8,129!!!! I am asking you to please FORWARD THIS VIDEO TO ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS to help me apply pressure to the TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD to reimburse me for my financial loss, and to curb this horrible GOVERNMENT OVERREACH! Thank you so very much- Sincerely, Mike Pekor mpekor@optonline.net www.taichili.com www.liphypnosis.com

To Mike Pekor:
Now that you removed it. Shame on you. I as well of others would have supported your cause in a court room. Now that you removed it and were Bamboozled, ( a word I used previously) now you want the town to reimburse you for the removal of the BAMBOO. You probably had a better shot at fighting to keep it.... It is a lame law that does not have any merits. You have all the documentation on how you installed it and for the maintenance and care required for this type of plant... You did nothing wrong by having it.....

Mike, it stinks that this happened to you but your video shows proof of what can happen. So while you offered to pay for the repair of your neighbors driveway, that stuff obviously got passed your barrier. The barrier isn't worth jack becasue if it can crack cement it can crack plastic. It is a major problem. Frankly, why would you shell out 10K for bamboo to begin with? Sure it's pretty but that's just nuts. I don't think the town should have to pay you for the plants you replaced it with. That's silly. Maybe they should have provided the excavation at best but not reimbursement for the bamboo to begin with. I mean you were wrong because it did break your neighbors driveway. So what if you offer to pay. It cracked it and God knows how many of those rhisomes are all over your neighbors yard already. Our bamboo was 3 feet down. THREE FEET! So your 24 inch barrier isn't enough. Nice try though. Sorry this happened to you. You seem like a nice guy. Just a bad situation.
Anne October 19, 2012 at 02:49 am
After years of telling our neighbor that HIS bamboo is destroying our property he removed it!! We know it is not truly gone because it is the plant that keeps on giving!!! Talk about being rude and obnoxious now we have the law on our side - does it really take a lawsuit to get someone to wake-up and do the right neighborly thing - oh I forgot we live on Long Island where everyone feels they can do what ever they want!!!!!!

What's to look into? Neil Koenig was the owner. He's good friends with my cousin. My cousin toldRead More me "he couldn't make a go of it." The last time I was there was in December. The food was just ok and the service was horrible. Not one course was correct and we didn't even change anything from the menu description. Note to the waitress, the appetizer is NOT supposed to come for dessert!! And Rich is correct. The name was Buongusto's PieSano's. I hope the new owners (Lia's) stop serving Chocolate Mouse (should be Mousse) as per the sign on the Prospect Avenue side of the building.
