UPDATE: Motorcycle Driver Remains in Critical, But Stable Condition at NUMC

The woman is in critical condition at NUMC.

A woman was injured in a motorcycle accident that happened at approximately 5:30 p.m. Wednesday evening on North Jerusalem Road near Bruce Drive in East Meadow.

As of 9 a.m. Friday, the woman remains in "critical, but stable condition" in intensive care unit, according to Shelley Lotenberg, director of public affairs at NUMC.

According to one witness, who chose not to be identified, the woman was cut off by a school bus while traveling westbound on North Jerusalem Road. She then crashed her motorcycle into a parked Nissan Xterra and was catapulted onto the pavement.

"It didn't look good," the witness said.

Emily Wood, 22, was sitting in her car when she heard a loud noise, and she looked outside to see the motorcycle on the ground and the woman bleeding from her head.

"I called 911," Wood said. "When they arrived, they said she had lost her pulse, but she eventually got it back."

Police shut down North Jerusalem Road between Bruce Drive and Cynthia Drive to contain the scene, and the police are encouraging motorists to use alternative routes.

This is a breaking news story, and Patch will update it as more information becomes available.

I'd like to know who the woman was and if her family was notified and got to the hospital and if she lived through the night. It happened right next door in the short time my friend and I went out to get my elderly mother her favorite burger for dinner. In that short time a life nearly transpired and so much commotion occurred and we could not get into the house because of the police investigation. Finally, we were advised to walk across the street and around the scene and back to the house, where my mother was waiting. The stories I was getting were changing moment to moment, and finally I got the right story from a neighbor, which matches your story. The Patch was quick to get the story out. Kudos to The Patch!

Thank you for the compliments Karen! I have not yet gotten notification on the name of the victim, but she is listed in critical but stable condition, according to NUMC's head of public affairs.

My neighbor's house was the best one in such a tragic accident, because she is one of the finest people around, and she happens to be an very experienced cardiac nurse, and the face the young woman crashed onto her sidewalk and lawn was lucky for her. Had the neighbor's daughter, who is a great young woman in her own right, and had the neighbor not been there at the moment of impact, they would not have called 911 immediately as they did. I was not home, and I don't think anyone else would have seen what happened, other than someone across the street who saw a school bus cut her off, causing the accident. Whether it was a No. Bellmore school bus or an East Meadow school bus, I don't know. My heart and prayers for the woman's full recovery goes out to her and her family and friends. It breaks my heart to know she had died and was brought back to life in front of the neighbor's eyes and I am glad the EMS workers are as competent as they are. My mother was saved by a firefighter and EMS workers when she had an major car accident several years ago. If not for them we could stand no chance of survival in some instances.

I appreciate your concern Karen. I am best friends with Kathleen, "Kat" as she is known to her friends. As far as Kathleen's comment: She wouldn't know who Kat's boyfriend is and I would appreciate it if the comments that are put on this post is positive. I for one will not tolerate ANYONE talking about Kat or "assuming" they know about her life. I hope this is the last time I will need to address this..

I have to say I am an innocent bystander concerned for this person you know as "KAT", but to Kathleen, I did read your comments that since your last post, has been deleted. You did write to "Alex" that he must be an acquantince or a friend from the bar and that you had seen a "John" parked by this woman's house...so as someone looking in for the first time, I can understand the reason for the recent posts..My personal prayers go out to this woman and her family, and I do agree with this "M" person that we should speak of everything positive..God Bless...

As a motorcyclist for over 50 years, it breaks my heart that " K" has to be in a place privy only to bikers. We will pray for her recovery and good health. It always the same story hit and run/ I didn't see the bike when I pulled out/made my turn/could not stop for the light! Nothing ever happens to them physically/legally/ or state involvement to have better awareness programs for all motorist,to be aware of bikes! I hope they fine the one responsibly for this unconscionable tragedy! In the wind, Lil Joe-Fl.

I wrote a piece "Nothing Ever Happens On My Street" inspired by the incident. I wanted to publish it, but don't know where at this point. My thoughts are with "Kat"....hoping she recovers fully. I met her brother and he is devoted to her. I wish I had such a good bother. She is lucky.
