Two Arrested on Attempted Robbery Charges in McVey Incident

Allegedly attempted to rob a teen near the rear of the elementary school.

Two males were arrested for an attempted robbery that occurred at McVey Elementary School earlier this month.

According to police, Ranier Sanchez, 20, of Hempstead, and Kenny Candelaria, 17, of East Meadow approached a 17-year-old male victim around 7 p.m. on Oct. 6 at the school's rear entrance and demanded he empty his pockets.

Defendant Sanchez then displayed a small badge and identified himself as a Nassau Police Officer and once again demanded he empty his pockets, police stated. The victim reportedly ran and both defendants chased him through the schoolyard. Sanchez then tripped the victim and pulled his shirt over his head.  The victim was punched and kicked while he was on the ground, according to police. The victim was able to pull off his sweatshirt and break free from the defendants, who chased him briefly.

The victim, who suffered pain to his head and shoulder, refused medical attention, police reported.

Candelaria and Sanchez are each being charged with Attempted Robbery 2nd Degree. Sanchez is additionally being charged with Criminal Impersonation and Attempted Robbery 2nd Degree/Physical Injury.

Candelaria was arrested on Oct. 7 and was arraigned on Oct. 8. Sanchez was arrested on Oct. 23 and will be arraigned on Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
