Teen Nabbed For Assaulting Woman Near Hooters

Jose Zavala-Mejia was arrested after slicing a woman with a knife.

A Hempstead man was arrested after he sliced the hand of a woman in front of in East Meadow on Friday morning, police said.

According to detectives, Jose Zavala-Mejia, 19, confronted a 27-year-old woman just after 2 a.m in the Hooters parking lot. Zavala-Mejia attempted to grab the woman and a struggle ensued, and police say that the woman was cut with a knife on her left hand.

After Zavala-Mejia headed westbound on Hempstead Turnpike, the woman was able to drive herself to the , and she was treated and got stitches for her injuries.

Zavala-Mejia was found in the "vicinity of Merrick Avenue," police say, and he was arrested without incident.

Zavala-Mejia is being charged with first degree attempted robbery, second degree assault and two counts of fourth degree possession of a dangerous weapon. He will be arraigned in first district court in Hempstead on Saturday.
