Sentencing Delayed for East Meadow Man Convicted of Murder

Herber Guzman, who faces 25 years to life in prison, is now expected to be sentenced in January.

Judge William Donnino delayed the sentencing of Herber Guzman Thursday after the convicted murderer from East Meadow asked for a new lawyer.

After one day of deliberation, a jury convicted Guzman of second-degree murder after he shot Stanley Cater of Hempstead in the abdomen in April 2012. Guzman did not know Cater, according to the Nassau County District Attorney's office.

Guzman faces 25 years to life in prison. His sentencing has been rescheduled for mid-January, a spokesperson from the DA's office said.

Guzman, 40, a father of three, has maintained his innocence, according to a Newsday report.
