Police Overtime Expected to Exceed $600K During Presidential Debate

Police are expecting a large turnout for Tuesday's debate at Hofstra University.

Police overtime totals for Tuesday's presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney at Hofstra University are being projected to exceed the $600,000 mark, according to reports.

Nassau County Police Insp. Kenneth Lack told Newsday [paid link] earlier this week that the county spent approximately $612,000 during the 2008 debate -- most of which went to overtime -- and that he expects Tuesday's debate to exceed the previous total.

Nassau taxpayers will be on the hook for what's estimated to exceed $600,000 in county police overtime because no one reimburses local municipalities for security costs.

Detectives, patrolmen, emergency-services and special operations officers, and hazardous-materials experts will work in and around the debate site, Hofstra's David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, Lack said.

Lack cited two additional sources of concern for police, Newsday reported: the recent "occupy" movement and the tea party, both of whom sit on opposite sides of the political spectrum.

Nassau Police have already issued numerous traffic and bus service advisories for the Hofstra area starting as early as 6 a.m. Tuesday.

It is ridiculous to spend that kind of money on this event. Have this debate somewhere else. Why should the taxpayers be on the hook, and why aren't the campaigns required to cover these type of costs?

It's free publicity and advertising for Hofstra University. They should pay the cost. I'm sure they solicited the presidential debate committee like years past and they where granted it again. The school should pay the cost.

They should have the debate at a real place -- Kelsey's on Northern Boulevard

The following comment was posted to the New Hyde Park Patch Facebook page by Ed Gerbe: "So collect 300K from each candidate. They can well afford it."

The funds for the campaigns should be required to pay for local impact like police costs. Like a previous poster said to collect $300k from each party......I agree

Blame management they are supposed to be in charge. Also NO pension credit for overtime .It's a rip off!!
Rose October 16, 2012 at 06:13 pm
NO Pension credit for OT! That's great. Ali Baba & the 40 thieves (aka NCPD) must be in tears that they can't pull more$$$ for the taxpayers.
robert October 16, 2012 at 08:12 pm
Once again, nobody to stand up for the taxpayers. Nassau is represented by gutless greedy worms! How much is it costing the cash strapped county to print up those large placards plastered with Mangano's picture informing the public about a one day job fare.

What's to look into? Neil Koenig was the owner. He's good friends with my cousin. My cousin toldRead More me "he couldn't make a go of it." The last time I was there was in December. The food was just ok and the service was horrible. Not one course was correct and we didn't even change anything from the menu description. Note to the waitress, the appetizer is NOT supposed to come for dessert!! And Rich is correct. The name was Buongusto's PieSano's. I hope the new owners (Lia's) stop serving Chocolate Mouse (should be Mousse) as per the sign on the Prospect Avenue side of the building.
