Police Officer Assaulted at NUMC

A Nassau County police officer suffered a severe leg fracture after a patient got violent.

A police officer suffered a severe fracture to his leg after being assaulted in the emergency room of the  Friday, police said.

According to detectives, the officer was requested at 12:50 a.m. to assist public safety officers that were engaged in a struggle with a patient. At that point, police said the patient, Warren Coffie, 27, became violent and a struggle ensued. A second officer responded, secured Coffie and made the arrest.

After the arrest was made, police say that an employee of the hospital, Tony McGee, 47, became physically confrontational with the officer and attempted to pull Coffie away, which led to McGee's subsequent arrest.

McGee was charged with resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration. Coffie was charged with second degree assault. Both defendants will be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Saturday.
