Police Foot Pursuit Ends in NUMC Parking Lot

Freeport man flees officers after allegedly stealing merchandise from Walmart.

A Freeport man was apprehended in the Nassau University Medical Center parking lot late Wednesday after a brief foot pursuit through East Meadow, Nassau County Third Squad detectives said.

Jorge Espinosa, 37, was observed concealing two pairs of sweatpants down his shorts while inside Walmart at 2465 Hempstead Turnpike, detectives said.

The defendant left the store and was observed on Hempstead Turnpike by Third Precinct police officers, according to a police report.

When approached, Espinosa fled and a foot pursuit ensued. Police caught up to the defendant in the NUMC parking lot but Espinosa refused to put his hands behind his when officers attempted to take him into custody, according to the police report. He was eventually apprehended.

One officer suffered a fractured finger during the struggle and was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

Proceeds were recovered, police said.

Espinosa was charged with second-degree assault, petit larceny and resisting arrest and will be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead Thursday.
