Police: East Meadow Man Blinded Restaurant Worker in Assault

Employee of Hicksville restaurant loses sight in one eye after October assault.

An East Meadow man was arrested Monday for an October assault that left a 36-year-old Hicksville restaurant employee blind in one eye.

According to Nassau County detectives, Premaras Selvaratnam, 31, was having dinner with friends on Oct. 19 at the Copper Wok restaurant, located at 16 West Marie St. in Hicksville.

Police said that during the meal, Selvaratnam and his friends began causing a disturbance. After being asked to leave by a restaurant employee, Selvaratnam got up and hit the employee in the head with a bar stool.

The strike from the bar stool caused lacerations to the employee's head and a severe eye injury. Police said that the victim has lost sight in his left eye due to the injury.

Selvaratnam was placed under arrest in Hicksville without incident Monday evening, police said. He is being charged with assault in the second degree and will be arraigned on Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.

Agreed! No reason for assaulting someone in that fashion. This person is a sissy! Had to use a barstool instead of his hands! Hope he try's that with Bubba, his cell mate!

Hey Cuomo, hurry up and get moving on a new law banning bar stools. That will keep them out of the hands of criminals!

Why did it take 3 months to arrest the man? Isn't use of a weapon aggravated assault? What did Mr. Selvaratnam do for a living and where does he live? Who was injured? Is that covered by Workers Comp? Was there a security video? Tx

This Premaras Selvaratnam is not an East Meadow "man." He's a stupid punk, jack-hole. I hope he rots in prison.

Dont want to get in a gun debate but when people say that I cringe....Bar stools, base ball bats, knives all have other uses in the world moron...Guns only have a few uses..to kill, for target practice, or for display..So all those other items you mention when you use that dumb phrase,,,what are they going to ban.......just makes ZERO sense..

The hardest part will be that your tax money of you pay any will have to play to feed this guy...He may ask for special muslim meals and special prayer time which cost a lot more in security...He will be sheltered, clothed, fed well, hot water, tv, , possibly exercise....The justice system gives this guys and evil people SOOOO many rights they are almost pampered in this day and age...Evil and bad people finding more rights then a average stand up citizen?? makes so much sense

When being in prison is worse than being free maybe less people will NOT want to chance going there. First offense, and non violent ok have your internet, tv and rehab. Anything else, no internet, no tv, no conjugal visits, no going to college or working out to make you a better killing machine when you get out. Plain food, no medical care that is not life saving. Too many are deliberately going to jail to get their prenatal care, schooling, their surgeries and their meds that they cannot afford. Enough with all this PC nonsense, the world is falling down ever since the term POLITICALLY CORRECT made an appearance. Make it possible for poor people to get decent medical care without having to commit a crime (though really they already can at NUMC) and stop coddling criminals! House the mentally ill in a facility specifically FOR the mentally ill. The sheer cost of antipsychotics and HIV meds going to NCCC is mind numbing. Oh and don't get me started on all of the illegals in there. Give me a no nonsense anti policically correct polititician to vote for to get things changed so that the law abiding citizens get treated better on this island than the criminals please!
