Officer Injured in East Meadow Crash

The first precinct officer was trying to avoid a bus when he crashed into a parked car and utility pole.

A First Precinct officer sustained minor injuries Monday after he crashed while trying to avoid a bus on North Jerusalem Road Monday, police said.

According to First Precinct officials, at around 11:30 p.m., the officer was driving his truck eastbound on North Jerusalem Road at Durham Road when he swerved to try to avoid the bus, which led to the crash.

"We're not sure what happened that caused him to swerve," one officer said. "That's still being investigated at this time."

The officer's vehicle struck a parked truck, and sent it more than 100 feet into the street, according to one witness. The police vehicle also struck a utility pole, which was partially dislodged from the ground. LIPA was called to the scene to help restore the pole safely.

The officer was taken to a nearby hospital for observation, although police officials said the injuries "were not serious."
