Newlywed Warns East Meadow About Car Thievery

Kim Ackerman's car was stolen right out of her driveway just days after she and her husband returned from their honeymoon.

One East Meadow couple was given the true test of marriage very early in their tenure together.

Kim Ackerman and Tim Bila were married in Mexico on Jan. 15, and they had their honeymoon there as well. They didn't have a great time though, and they decided to end their trip early.

"First, our bags were misplaced on the flight out there," Ackerman said. "Then, we found another man's underwear in our bathroom."

That wasn't the half of it.

The couple returned on Jan. 22, and on Jan. 24, Ackerman noticed that her Honda Civic was not in the driveway where she left it.

"I thought my dad took the car," Ackerman said. "But then I heard him inside, and I asked him what he did with the car."

Ackerman says her father denied doing anything with the car, only saying that it was in the driveway when he had left for work at about midnight. He told her to call the police, because the car was probably stolen.

"I told him that this was not funny," Ackerman said. "But it turns out my car really was stolen after all."

Ackerman called the police, and the car was recovered, but it had been completely stripped. The motor was gone, and Ackerman says police described the car as "undriveable."

"I went down, and all of my stuff was there except for a few minor things," Ackerman said. "They left my expensive shoes and textbooks, but they took my cell phone charger and a couple of other things."

Ackerman did not have theft insurance, so she will not be compensated for the loss.

"I get nothing," she said.

Ackerman says that she cannot figure out how the thieves got into the car, admitting that she herself has had problems with shutting the alarm off.

"I have spoken to a few mechanics, and I think the only way they could have gotten into my car was by towing it," Ackerman said. "They must've did that while we were asleep."

Ackerman says it's important for her to keep the community apprised of what's going on.

"I just want the East Meadow community to have an idea of what's happening," Ackerman said.

Police say the matter is still under investigation.
