James Surless Seeks Re-Election for Fire Commissioner

The East Meadow resident has been part of the EMFD since 1964.

East Meadow resident James M. Surless is running unopposed in hope of serving a fourth term as Commissioner of the as elections commence on Dec. 13.

Surless, 69, has lived in East Meadow since 1963, and in his 48 years with the EMFD, he has served as Lieutenant, Captain, Chief and Commissioner. He has served in his current post since 1996.

"He is whole-heartedly supported by the entire department," Chief Carl Pugliese said.

One concern in past elections has been the turnout, and Surless urges residents to head down to the polls.

"The idea is to come down and vote," Surless said. "It shows that the community is out there supporting you."

Polls will be open Tuesday from 1-9 p.m. If you live north of Hempstead Turnpike, vote at Fire Station 3 at the intersection of Newbridge Road and Carnation Road in Levittown. For those who live south of Hempstead Turnpike, voting will proceed at Fire Department Headquarters next to the East Meadow Public Library.

"We’re here to serve the community," Surless said. "Hopefully, they come out and support us in the election."

The East Meadow Fire District includes East Meadow, and parts of Levittown, Westbury, Hicksville and North Bellmore.
