A fire broke out at BP Gas Station on Hempstead Turnpike as a result of a car accident early Tuesday afternoon.
According to East Meadow Fire Chief John Priest, a two-car auto accident on the turnpike caused one car to veer off into the gas station. The car struck two gas pumps before coming to a stop.
Priest said the fire was in the car and did not spread to the gas station.
"While it was damaged, the gas station or the gas pumps were not actually involved in the fire," Priest said.
Two people were transported to the hospital after the accident. Priest said one was transported prior to the East Meadow Fire Department's arrival, however, the second injured person was transported for minor injuries from the car accident.
The gas station is located on the north side of Hempstead Turnpike, just east of Eisenhower Park.
Nassau County Hazmat Unit and Fire Marshal responded to the scene, as well as local fire departments.
