EMHS Senior Avoids Tragedy in Crash

After the light at Newbridge Road and Hempstead Turnpike malfunctioned, Casey Carrick's car was struck while going through the intersection.

Casey Carrick, a senior at , was driving to school like any other day Tuesday when she realized the traffic light at Newbridge Road and Hempstead Turnpike was out, and a short time after that, she was involved in a crash.

"The traffic light was broken and I was waiting to turn left on the way to school and the people on Hempstead Turnpike stopped to let us go, so everyone was turning," Carrick said. "I turned too, and everyone else was stopped except for the one guy that wasn't paying attention and hit me on the driver's side of the car."

Carrick was taken to the and was treated for a bruised foot, although, as of Wednesday, she was complaining of back and neck pain.

According to Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) spokesman Mark Gross, the outage was caused by a broken tap making contact with a transformer. Gross added that 20 customers were affected for about 90 minutes.
