East Meadow United Methodist Church Vandalized

Church sign changed to read "Hitler" and the rope to American flag cut, according to church office administrator.

Vandalism was discovered early Monday on the grounds of East Meadow United Methodist Church, where church officials found the rope to the American flag cut and the church sign changed to read "Hitler."

The church is located at 470 East Meadow Avenue.

Michele Sharp, the church's office administrator, said the vandalism was discovered at approximately 10 a.m. The letters inside the double-sided sign, which had information about this past Sunday's fair, were rearranged on one side to spell "Hitler."

"We're obviously very upset," Sharp said. "It just feels like an attack."

Sharp said the church sign has been vandalized before but not to this extent. "At first we thought it was maybe just kids but this is taking it too far," she said.

Pastor Judith Stevens wishes to apologize to members and the entire community, especially those of the Jewish faith.

The church filed a report with Nassau County police. When contacted, however, police had no further information at this time.

The sign was removed as soon as it was discovered Monday morning, Sharp said.
