East Meadow Near Top in Pedestrian Struck Fatalities

Hempstead Turnpike has been deemed the most dangerous road, according to the Tri-State Transportation Campaign.

A recent report that was put out by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign stated that is among the area's most dangerous roadways.

A total of 15 deaths were reported on Hempstead Turnpike during the three-year stretch, while seven were reported on Sunrise Highway and five on Merrick Road.

According to the report, which can be accessed here, the following fatalities occurred in East Meadow during the studied timeframe.

  • 77-year-old female was killed on Oct. 28, 2009 in the vicinity of East Meadow Avenue and McKinley Avenue.
  • 58-year-old male was killed on Hempstead turnpike near on Feb. 18, 2008.
  • 27-year-old male was killed on Aug. 23, 2009 in the vicinity of on Hempstead Turnpike.
  • 68-year-old female was killed on July 28, 2009 near the intersection of Newbridge Road and Hempstead Turnpike.
  • 77-year-old female on Nov. 28, 2010 near the intersection of Newbridge Road and Hempstead Turnpike.
  • Male, age unknown, was killed on Sept. 26, 2009 on Park Boulevard in

On July 15, 2011, Robert Core, who was a public safety officer for the Town of Hempstead, was driving while intoxicated after he a Lindenhurst man on Hempstead Turnpike.

"We have already initiated actions to improve the safety of Hempstead Turnpike," William Reynolds, the Director of Communications with the New York State Department of Transportation, said. "... In line with our focus on pedestrian safety, we will be taking a close look at conditions on Sunrise Highway, as we do with all major roadways, and determine what actions need to be taken. We will continue to focus on improving safety for all roadway users."
