East Meadow Man Killed in Virginia Car Crash

Virginia State Police say that Robert Cerny, 67, succumbed to injuries sustained in accident on Interstate 95 Thursday.

An East Meadow man was killed on Thursday morning when his car struck a tree on Interstate 95 in Virginia, police say.

According to Virginia State Police, Robert Cerny, 67, was traveling north on I-95 just before 8 a.m. when the 2010 Isuzu he was driving ran off the road and stuck a tree just south of Route 642 in Sussex County.

Cerny was extracted from the vehicle and was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg where he later died from his injuries, according to officials.

Police say that Cerny was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Editor's Note: In the initial report of this story, East Meadow Patch mistakenly used the word ejected instead of extracted when referring to Mr. Cerny. That mistake has been corrected and we apologize for the error.
